On the night of July 19, 1900, at 10:35 p.m, the city was rocked by two terrific’ explosions of six tons of powder and every plate glass window in town was shattered. Ws, The people of Nevada City rushed from their homes thinking the day of judgment had arrived, The dynamite catastrophe was preceded by a light explosion, followed by a dull and heavy rumbling, and a streak of fire as if from lightning flashed over the town. Then all hell seemed to break loose as the second and heavy explosion occurred and aroused the entire town. The explosion was believed to have been caused by a fiend after J. E, Carr picked up a burned fuse four feet long at the scene of the explosion -George E, Turner's powder magazine, near the Reward mine near the south city limits. The cause of the blast has never been determined, although some thought deteriorated nitroglycerine was the energating force. Legg & Shaw Co,, the predecessor of the Alpha Hardware Co., had a powder magazine 425 feet away from the Turner magazine that contained 10 tons’ of powder, Although the building was damaged by falling debris, powder was spilled from cases onto the floor, and a revived fire the following afternoon threatened the magazine the Legg & Shaw building was secured from explosions. The explosion was reported heard and the shock felt in Grass Valley, North Bloomfield, Auburn and Sacramento, but first rumors of damage in the quartz city were unfounded, Many women fainted and went into hysterics, The explosion tore a crater in the ground 25 to 30 feet deep, 40 feet long and 38 feet wide, plowed up ground for 100 feet around and uprooted trees of two to three feet in diameter. The officials believe the grove of trees in which Turner's magazine was located, was the only thing that saved the city from destruction, The magazine had walls eight inches thick, The crater still remains and can be seen on the left hand . side of Reward Street. Glass and particularly plate window glass was the principal item in Nevada City damaged by the-blast. Legg & Shaw astutely placed an advertisement immediately in the Transcript reading "Orders taken for plate glass and larger sizesof sheet glass." Several chimneys in town were victims ot the explosion. At the next meeting of the city trustees a discussion on a better dispersal of powder magazines was carried on by the city fathers and the hardware dealers, George C, Gaylord & Son, and Legg & Shaw agreed to reduce their stores and disperse them. Turner Shaw agreed to reduce their stores and dispearse them. Turner wrily remarked his powder storage problems had been solved. The board of supervisors passed an ordinance prohibiting the storage of more than five tons of powder in a given place, over the protests of persons familiar with the handling of powder, The ordinance was not repealed until after the first world war. ‘ val Seven Hills announces its honor roll Students at Seven Hills School who are listed on the second quarter honor roll were announced today.* Eighth graders on the honor roll are: Ben Adcock, Jayne Allstot, Joni Bertram, Jeff Bousfield, Dale Brittan, Dan Christie, Sally DeMartini, Linda Dick, Meggy Emrich, Joe Gagliardi, Susan Hall, “Vicki Hallett, Melody Heisey, Madge. Chamber asks scenic route for old road The Nevada County Chamber of Commerce has _ adopted a resolution asking that Old Donner Pass Road be designated a state scenic highway and be kept open all year. Representatives of the Truckee-Donner Chamber of Commerce asked county chamber approval of the resolution during a meeting in Norden Ski Lodge near Donner Pass. Because the road is a route of "significant historical importance and unusual scenic
beauty", the resolution suggests that winter closure denies the public the "privilege and enjoyment of their heritage." The resolution states that closure during winter has adversely affected residents and businesses of Soda Springs, Norden, Donner Summit and Donner Lake. It states that closure during winter isolates the communities from public services and impedes evacuation, Nevada Coanty : Rainfall Gauge NEVADA CITY Max, Min, R, Feb, 10 59 29. .00 Feb, 11 69 33 .00 Feb, 12 75 33 .00 Feb, 13 71 35 .00 Feb, 14 69 33 .00 Feb, 15 63 33 206 Feb, 16 58 29 .00 Rain .to date 39.49 Rain last year 48.71 GRASS VALLEY Max, Min.
