whatever scraps of food they can
beg or find somehow. A volunteer
is needed who could teach practical agriculture of the 4H type to
the children (are you listening,
Nevada County 4H'ers?)
The Good Shepherds Home is
‘the Ministry ‘shome for girls from
aged 12 to 18, corresponding in
some ways to the work school for
boys. Some rough and tumble
sisters run the school--rough and
tumble, yes, but they do wonders
with the girls, One hundred of
them, and four tiny babies, live
in dormitory-style buildings in
one of the most beautiful settings
in Ecuador--the valley down below Quito. A girl Volunteer used
to teach domestic arts and home
economics two days a week, but
she has gone home, The position
is still open--I think it would be
a full-time job. Also the sisters
say they have some trouble playing basketball in their long habits

can get volunteers to these

This morning Isatin on the organizational meeting of the Ecuadorian Peace Corps. There were
five delegates representing each
high school and university in the
area, and the Corps will be developed along three lines: to develop education campaigns in the
rural communities, to collaborate with members of the U.S.
Peace Corps in their projects, and ,.
to develop national consciousness
among Ecuadorian youth. I've
heard this type of talk before, but
this does look good.
You may have read of a student
demonstration here. It did indeed
take place, but on a compara~
tively smallscale. I had to brush
upon the background myself, and

I wonder if a lot of us aren't
rather.ignorant of what has happened in South A merica since
Pizarro, What comes up now is
the anniversary of the Rio Protocol,” What's that? Well, just before we got into World War Il,
Peru invaded southern Ecuador
and held control of the entire
southern half of the country by
pure military strength. Ecuador
at that time hadn't much of an
army (this is no longer true,
naturally), so Peru demanded
title to the land or else promised
to finish the job post haste.
Ecuador, somewhat perturbed,
complained tothe US and to surrounding countries. This was late
in the year 1941, when the US
could hardly afford to get involved in South American revolutions, sowe were among the ones
who decided that the line should
be drawn where the combatants
stood. The Rio Protocol pact was
signed on January 29, 1942.
Ecuador still tends to be somewhat bitter about the matter; the
anniversary each year is an occa~
sion for the Rio Protocol to be
dragged out again and raked over
the coals, It is also the occasion
for a students’ “silent march of
national dignity”.
Enough of historical back
ground, I'm not exactly sure
where thenext few letters will be
written from, My thirty-day vacation is coming up in February
(Peace Corpsrules, remember, to
shuttle us out and away from our
work for awhile), and three of us
willbe leaving tosee some of the
rest of South America. I hope to
visit the Mancuso family in
Brazil, renewing friendships
started when they stayed with us
during the 1961 International Student Weekend in Nevada City.
When I get back it will be perhaps
to get started at last in the teaching I was trained for; the Peace
Corps is sending a staff representative (full time) to continue the
work I have been doing. This is
great.
There are all sorts of advantages in living in one of the
smallest countries in Latin A merica. I'm thinking now of Culture
and Civilization and all that, A
little country hasn't got too much
of those things--at least the material evidence--but it has to
come from somewhere, and it
does. I've seen more films from

allover the world recently --from
‘Italy, France, Mexico, Uso. i's
beginning to recognize the good
and the bad from each of those
places. In the States we have
enough to provide for ourselves,
andwhata pity it is. A real pity.
If one doesn't go to another
church sometimes, how can he
‘know what is good about his own?
If he can't ever visit another
town? Another country? But in this
small country it all comes together--the cultures, the civilizations, the ideas, the material
goods: such a wealth of opportunity to understand other peoples.
