The Lions heard from Gary Pitman, entomologist at Boyce"Thompson’s North Star Experi' mental Forests at the south . edge of Grass Valley. . PINE TREES are common in the Golden Empire as are the Oaks which give this Alta Sierra home a setting of its own. Pitman described the institute’s experiments in eradication measures against the pine bark beetle, which can and has killed many trees here and in ‘other areas. The seriousness of this pest. is that seven times as many trees die annually from beetle infestations as from forest fires, Pitman said. ‘‘They are not conspicuous there isno smoke. _= but check the brown-topped trees in July,” he said. Pitman commented that several brown-topped trees just off the freeway at Brunswick Road have been killed by pine park beetles which congregate in droves of 2,000 to 3,000 on a single tree, bore into’ the bark and wipe out the tree. Damage to pines in Idaho has been extremely serious, and in Honduras, an epidemic became so bad that the beetles were 200,000 trees'a day. ‘‘When a few. thousand of them congregate on one of your trees, your tree is out of business,” Pitman. added. ‘‘By the time the tree .turns brown, it has been dead quite a while.’’ Thus, the key is ‘‘prevention rather than treatment,”’ he said. It. was. indicated. that. the beetles sense and. select a tree that is weak, tending to leave stronger ones alone, Thus, homeowners should not top pine trees if possible and should not dig around them, disturbing the roots and weakening the tree. Pitman said insecticides are important in controlling these insects because the beetles only spend one per cent of their time flying from tree to tree, The rest is spent under the bark where insecticides can't reach them effectively. Boyce Thompson has been experimenting witha chemical preparation to duplicate the female scent which attracts the beetles. This scent is placed in mechanical traps ‘‘to which we hope to lure them in and destroy them.” If a tree has died from beetle infestation, the. best thing the the ‘homeowner can do is tree down and destroy.the beetles by burning or some Other method. This prevents them from spreading to other trees, Pitman concluded,
