You can just about depend on it, midwinter's worst storm will issu
Last Wednesday, in Rough and Ready's worst storm in several years, we had three of them.
Cutie Pie only gave us one this year but he sure is a whopper and black as the ace of spades.
It still amazes me that they can be so completely black and yet grow up to be white. Of course
he is of a very proud lineage and will bear the proper black markings. Sweet William (Bill #2
on his papers) can be very proud of him. We don't follow up with registering our babies but
we like good blood so they will be good looking and nice and strong. Josephine had two babies
one boy and one girl. The little girl had a bit of trouble at first. Mother tried to nelp her but
she simply couldn't find the food supply. She is an extra big baby with very long legs and now
that she has gotten the hang of the thing she gets down on her knees and everything is in the
proper perspective. She still looks to me for her bottle when she hears my voice. She really
is a little glutton, Thank goodness those three hour bottles (until midnight) are over for a while
at least. Bathsheba doesn't act too enthusiastic but I hope she will have babies soon, Our barn
is big and not too cold but we have an infrared lamp in both lambing pens. The babies scoot
under them as soon as they are full of warm milk and they don't even know it's cold, But even
with sweaters, boots, and my warm chore coat I sure do, I had to hang my coat outside until
I get it to the cleaner. I smell more like a sheep than they do.

Snow kind of spoiled Planning Director Stanley Mansfield's meeting about Rough and
Ready zoning last Wednesday night. A lot of interested people carne in spite of it all but it
sure took courage. The meeting broke up a little early and we came home in a white, white
world, Mrs, Alan Campbell, who lives on down Highway 20 a piece from us, and I enjoyed the
discussion and learned a lot but found we were just beyond the area to be zoned. There were
several others there who came to learn and were not actually involved, "Bob" Caris, our area
planning commissioner, attended ‘but did not speak. David Porter, assistant to Mansfield,
who is a resident of our own community, made the presentation and answered the specific
questions about our area, They base the zoning on the General Plan, adjust (some) for current
usage, apply all state and county regulations and actually there isn't much leeway left. I was
very pleased with it all. But then I am kind of naive about such things. Can't see what would be
accomplished by hurting someone if it wouldn't be for the common good, In America this still
comes first, Wait until they decide to zone our 1200-plus-foot frontage commercial (which I
am sure they won't) then you will hear me yell. Common good be hanged. It would increase
our taxes even more and would cut down on the number of cute babies we could raise around
here. There is very little allowed for "commercial"' in Rough and Ready, which pleased me
immensely but upset some. There were mutterings of “this is the Township of Rough and Ready
and we have some rights." Mansfield said zoned this way it would help them to keep the undesirable types of commercial ventures in really commercial areas. Any increase in mobile
homes except -in specified areas will be hit hard, I’m a great one for believing that everyone
should have. the right to put the kind of home he wants on his own property but I sure go along
with insisting that proper protective (or beauty and ecology) lot sizes be required for everyone.
Now that miserable tax break is something else again. I'm again it. Just as I am agin the unfair tax breaks that millionaires hunt up. for themselves so that they can get out of bearing
their proper share of the tax burden. These "breaks" mean that you and I are paying enough
to take care of their share also. I can't approve of the type of people that usually take advantage
but "breaks" should all be made illegal. They are unamerican and discriminating. I guess that
is a double positive but I feel emphatic. Nothing is gained by just getting angry with our neighbors because they are getting a better break than we are. It just relieves the steam that we
could better use to get those "breaks" removed.

Did you hear the one about the teenager that had been trying to leave home for a year?
Every time she got to the door, the telephone rang.

Rough and Ready birthdays for the middle section of February, include: Phillip Perry
and Kenneth Mader, Feb. 13; Irene Lanzendorfer, Feb. 15; Elaine Vogt, Feb, 17; and Frank
O'Neal, Feb. 19. If I missed yours, please let me know. Last week I missed Mrs, Lucille
McCrea who celebrated her big day on Feb. 1. As you know, Kenny Mader and his nice little
family have moved down to the flatlands to be nearer his work. He still seems like Rough
and Ready to me. ~~

Mrs. Lisetta Scheave had as guests at the chamber dinner, her childhood friends, the
Carl Koerners. Mr. and Mrs, Koerner retired to this area from the New England states.
Lisetta met them again here quite by accident. Their families were neighbors in Spokane
many years ago when they were all very young. It really is a small world after all!!

It is difficult to keep up with all the new neighbors who come to Rough and Ready and
so last week I felt especially lucky to register as new voters the Ray Silverias of the Mobile
Homes Park. Susan and Ray Silveria are from the bay area and plan on making their home in
Nevada county because it is "such a healthy place to live." Silveria is employed at Loma
Rica, They have two sons, Bobby and Bret who attend Ready Springs School. They plan to start .
developing their small ranch in the Indian Springs area as soon as they get settled. They
were oe with the snow and had a great many guests from the bay area to witness the
white stuff.
