4 The Nevada County Nugget, February 2, 1972
“Notes off
By P. L. Smith
Several of us carefully checked every nook and cranny of
the big luxury liner "Oriana",
at her pier in San Francisco,
in search of a good place to
stow away — on the afternoon
of January 22, We kept running
into the handsomest ship's officers — some of whom resembled "Sebastian Cabot" -all
of whom had lots of very official-looking braid and other insigne on their smartly tailored
uniforms. . . .veddy, veddy British, old top. Made one feel they
might be mind-readers also!
There's nothing so frustrating
to the travel bungry, is there?
Anyhow, one of my co-workers here in Nevada City —
Margaret Trivelpiece of The
. Union was among the. fortunate aboard that dreamboat; and
about to head for the Virgin Islands on a long-planned vacation cruise.
Pier 35, the P & O British
Lines berth which housed the
Oriana until her 4 p.m. departure southward, was the scene
of some feverish, movie-like
activity. After the many champagne bashes aboard — all visitors had to leave the ship at
3 p.m. — hundreds lined the
ways to watch the multi-detailed
sailing procedures — to the
tunes played by an excellent
band. There may have been
some misty-eyed ones in that
crowd. . . .but \my eyes were
just pure, plain and simply
green from envy! Do have a
wonderful time, Margaret — I
wish I were there!

There's nothing more frightening — when driving on iceslick mountain roads up here
than to have a following vehicle ride right up on your tail
lights, with the headlights on
high beam. (Many fatal accidents, and many other resulting in permanently maimed victims, have been cause by just
such moronic driving tactics.)
I often wonder how drivers like
that ever get a license to pilot
anything on wheels. They need
"keepers"! :
Recently, I've encountered
just such idiots on Highway 49
and Highway 20..
pass even when given every
-when the,
following driver was afraid to’
the Cuff’ .
opportunity on the straight
stretches; ‘and minus whatever
brains it takes to lower his
beams, Some rather violent
thoughts have passed thru my
mind over those miles,

Our pixilated pussies, Mix
and Match, are growing
astoundingly fast in every way.
They have devised a new game,
most. likely called "Watch the
Doggie Run!" It goes something
like this. . .and is fun to
watch. . . .let a stray dog
wander onto the property and
they start silent stalking, from
wide-flank positions. . . .and
just as silently ‘pounce from
the rear. At that point they
scratch wildly and emit loud
meows of victory. So, if numerous stray dogs show up in
surrounding counties. . . .worn
to a frazzle and shuddering at
the sight of any house cat..
you may surmise they have encountered our "Calico Kids"..
the fastest pouncers in the
West!

He'd lost his rear license
plate, but the driver of a small
foreign car did a good deed the
other day that must not go unmentioned — even if we cannot
supply his name. As he neared
the. junction of Highways 49 and
20 he pulled carefully off the
side of the roadway and picked
up two large paper sacks of tin
cans and other garbage. Finding no garbage caontainer nearby, this young man stowed the
mess in the trunk of his car
and took it to a service station
on Coyote street — and deposited it in a waste barrel there.
Then he quietly drove off about
his business,

The Monday morning citizen's
action meeting was well attended. Discussion centered around
--what we can do on a personal
and local level. The purpose of
the meeting was to discuss environmental problems and recycling.
Don Hoagland, Senator
Teale's associate, sent a letter
of commendation, which was
read. He enclosed an article
entitled, "Recycling begins in
the Kitchen," This was read.
Some of the suggestions were:
Have separate containers for
glass, aluminum, steel cans and
paper. Remove ends of steel . .
cans and smash, flat. Tie papers in stacks 12" high. Use recycled paper products.
Dorilynn and Cynthia Moler
and Kristlin Now were out this
weekend in their "operation:
clean-sweep."" Next weekend
several of their friends have
promised to join them picking
up litter. City Manager Beryl
Robinson, of Nevada City, and
his children have a section of
road which they clean up systematically. The youngsters
have earned their spending
money on this project.
