I was in part responsible for the NC meeting. It was the campaign
when the Republicans were sure they couldn't lose, Truman would
fail. Dewey would win. Warren would be the new VP and Lt. Gov.
Knight would become the new Gov. of California. But Republicans
missed the boat on two counts and couldn't interpret the hints of
impending disaster. They had no

now Captain Lee Smart of the US Army Regulars at Ft. Benning,
Georgia. Well, we lost. As always in politics, the best laid plans
of mice and men to often go astray.
So once again it is election time. Millions will be spent and all
over the land there will be the sweet smell of success and the tragedy of failure. And the terrible post-mortems~--what did we do
right? What did we do wrong? And always in the background that
mysterious something called fate. Lee Oswald's assassin's bullet,
or a heart attack of an office seeker. To TV debate or not to TV
debate.
Here in Nevada County the most talked about political person-,
ality is Margarette Brown Meggs. She is a colorful character on the
ballot horizon; She has education and charm. She has verve and
nerve. She is a joiner, At last count she belonged to 22 organizations. She is adored by the hard-working women precinct workers
of her party. Why, oh why, did Maggie flip flop? Her campaign
for Assemblyman was in high gear and odds were being placed that
Maggie had an outside chance to win. Then whammy. Rather than
fight she switched to the race for State Senator. I don't know who
advised her to be a martyr for the Republican party, but it sounds
to me that somebody in the inner circle did Maggie dirt. I hope it
wasn't the former US Senator William Knowland, Republicans are
still picking up the debris that he scattered when the Presidential
bug bit him. When his big-time ill-advised ambition failed, the
Republicans had lost the California Governorship and a seat in the
US Senate. ;
At the moment I walk the lonely road with my own political
conscience. I can find no enthusiasm for either party. I am disenchanted with the direction my own minority party in Nevada County
appears to be heading. Much of the philosophy of the majority party
I find distasteful. At heart I am a moderate liberal.
Nevada County Republicans always seem to win the battle and (Continued on Page 16)

What Do You
Get? --Sand Fleas
By Debby Thompson
With the twang of guitars, the
beat ofthe drums, and the shreik
of hundreds of teenage girls--the
Beatles are here. And it seems
they ‘ve hit NU as hard as any
other place.
There are at NU three major
_groups of thought on the Beatles.
1) You detest them, (2) You love
them. (3) You like them merely
because they dareto be different.
Iwould say that the first group
isthe minority group. It is made
up largely of teachers, although
there are a few brave students who
dare to say that they dislike the
Beatles. It is amazing how seldom
a member of this group complains
about the way the new Beatles
sing. Comments are generally
centered on their hair. It is from
this Beatle-hating group that we
get jokes like “Bottle the Beatles
and sell them for hair restorer”.
Ho, ho, ho! At this point Beatle
lovers go mad,
For the most part the majority
of Beatle-lovers base their feelings on the way the Beatles sing,
play, dress, and wear their hair.
In short, everything the Beatles
dois wonderful. Most of the girls
in this group say that they would
never scream if they saw the
Beatles in person. But one Beatle
lover screamed when “I Want to
Hold Your Hand" came on in the
car radio, frightening her mother
into almost losing control of the
car.
Never standin a Beatle-lover's
way when she wants to get an album. The night after their first
performance on Ed Sullivan's
Show, one girl came home very
proud that she got the last Beatle
album in the store, Eight other
girlshad wanted it also. It didn't
seem to matter that the plastic
over the album was ripped to
shreds andin one place the cover
itslef had been torn, It was some
sort of golden triumph just to have
that album!
The third and final group
doesn't say too much, Just that
the Beatles are terrific to dance
to, even if they can't sing. This
group firmly believes that the
Beatles are just having a ball
without getting too serious about
the waythey dress, sing, or wear
their hair.
In closing, I leave you with
one of the few jokes all three
accept:
.
What do you get when you cross
the Beatles with the Beachboys?
Sand fleas.
