Nevada City Boy Scout Troop 24
Holds Court of Ho
The night of February 13 will
be a memorable’one for the
members of Boy: Scouts Troop
24, for on this night the annual
ceremonies for the court of
honor was held in the Nevada
City Elks Hall and sponsored by
the Nevada City Elks #518.
The meeting was opened by a
candlelight ceremony emphasizing the twelve points of the
Scout law.
Star Scouts. were John Miller
and John Smith, Troop officers
recognized with warrants of the
awards given, plus fourteen
merit badges, included: John
Moore, Senior Patrol Leader;
Tim Goodwill, Scribe; Kiven
Kelley, Quartermaster; Don
Bennette, Librarian; John Miller,
Jim Smith, Dennis O'Connell
and Tom Chavez; Patrol Leaders; Bill Stark, Dana Rich, Dave
Goodwill and Charles Dant, Assistant Patrol Leaders, Tenderfoots included Claire Miner,
Mike Weaver, Bill Stark, Dan
Pugh, Kennet Kemp, Steve
Davis, and John Waddell, Dave
Goodwill and Steve Dant were
Second Class Scouts, Don Bennette, Tom Chavez, Kiven
Kelley and Charles Dant, were
First Class Scouts, John Miller
received the one mile Swim
Award--an award of considerable importance,
A special visitor was Dale
Stanley, an Eagle Scout, Troop
57, from Grass Valley, introduced by Joe Allsup. Dale will
be a host to the 12th World
Jamboree at Farragut State Park
in Idaho, to be held August 1
thru 9, 1967, He gave ashort,
but informative, talk on his
duties at the World Jamboree,
This will be the first time a
World Jamboree has been held
in these United States,
There are 26 scouts in Troop
24 and these boys are worthy of
much praise. for the hours of
work they put forth over a period
of months to earn their awards,
This year many of the parents
have been most beneficial in
assisting in their projects and
this has been most appreciated
by the leaders as well as the
Elks, who are always most proud
of the accomplishments of the
scouts,
Allan Smith, Cub Scout Round
Table Commissioner, who is
also on the Boy Scout Committee and Institutional Representative for Cub Pack #23, filled
the role of Master of Ceremonies
during the evening, He was
assisted by Herbert Treloar,
Institutional Representative for
Troop 24 under the sponsorship
of Nevada City Elks #518; Joe
Allsup, Scoutmaster; Dale Miller, Assistant Scoutmaster; and
Joe Duncan, Assistant Scoutmaster; all of Troop 24,
Special guests for the evening
ceremonies were Mr. Tom
Stanley, Ponderosa District
Commissioner; Mr, Edmund
Greenmum, Ponderosa District
Executive; and Mr. Robert
Weaver, Merit Badge Counselor,
Also present and assisting were:
Mr. Don Baker, Boy Scout Committee Chairman and Elks’
Youth Activity Chairman; Mr,
Jim Kendricks, Boy Scout Committee and Lecturing Knight for
the Nevada City Elks; Mr.
"Babe" Childers, Secretary’ for
the Elks; and Mr, “Butch” Casci.
Last, but~—far, far from least,
was Mr. Willism_ Ghidotti,
Lodge Trustee, and all round
assistant anywhere and whenever needed,
Preceding the ceremonies,
approximately 100 scouts, their
Parents and guests enjoyed a
bountiful pot luck dinner, The
tables were beautifully and appropriately decorated with pine
cones and boughs to symbolize
this district, the Ponderosa,
Mrs. Dale Miller and Mrs, Al
Smith, assisted by their committee, deserve the credit for
the decorations,

Dale Stanley, Eagle Scout Troop 57 of Grass Valley, as he was
introduced by Joe Allsup, Scoutmaster of Troop 24, Nevada City.
It was announced that very
soon there would be an overnight snow camp outing at
N.I, D. Camp 19, approximately six miles up Highway 20, in
the Bowman Lake Area,
Troop 24 meets from 7 to 9
p.m., each Monday evening at
Seaman's Lodge, Nevada City.
Any boy, between the ages of
11to 14 years who is interested
in becoming a scout, is extended
an invitation to attend these
meetings and join if he wishes,

highlighted last Wednesday
evening's session of Troop.299

the event was held at Ready
Springs School multi-purpose
room,
The big night coinciding with
Boy Scout Week's and the 57th
anniversary of the program, featured an inspiring ceremony in
the presenting of an American
flag and standard to the new
Boy Scout troop by Thomas
Hague Hergerty Post of the
American Legion, Presentation
of the flag was under the direction of Ed Schuckert,
Americanism chairman of the
Post, assisted by M, W. Cicogni, commander, Tony
Casci, chaplain, and Howard
Wasley, member of the executive board. An interesting
talk on "the colors” was given
by Zoe Ann Schuckert, a member of a local Junior Girl Scout.Troop, and daughter of the
chairman of the presentation,
Adult leadership of the troop
‘are Scoutmaster. Al Sears, Assistant Scout Master is Darwin
Keyser, Sponsoring the unit is
Ready Springs Parent Teacher
Club, with troop committee
including Victor Pulsifir,
chairman; William E, Thomas,
John T, Trauner, Neal Sorenson, Donald Neller and Jim
Cranmer, institutional representatives,
Charter for Troop 299 was
presented to Cranmer by Tom
Stanley, district commissioner
of Ponderosa district BSA. The
institutional representative in
turn presented the charter to
Neal Sorenson, president of
Ready Springs PTC,
Betore flickering candtelight,
the troop led by Senior Patrol .
Leader George Sommerhalder
recounted the 12 points of the
Scout law: and their meaning.
Later each boy was presented
with the red and gold bordered
neckerchief which marks the
new troop by Assistant Scoutmaster Keyser.
Scoutmaster Sears presented
tenderfoot badges and mother's
miniature pins to scouts, Paul
Keyser, Jimmy Taylor, Frank
Sears, Shelly Hockstedler,
Mike Bowman, Mike Thomas,
Sid McCool, John Trauner and
Ed Sommerhalder,
Leaders of the Penn Valley
troop are George Sommerhalder,
senior patrol leader, Rich Pulsifir, patrol leader of Squirrel
Patrol; Paul Keyser, assistant
Patrol leader; Mike Bowman,
Patrol leader of Wolf Patrol;
Mike Thomas assistant patrol
leader; John Trauner, scribe;
and Ed Sommerl‘alder, quartermaster. Two new transfer
members are Don and Robert
Balmat, who are second class
ranked scouts from Seward,
Alaska,
Special guest for the evening
was Ed Greenmun of Auburn,
district scout executive of Tahoe Area Council,
Following the closing ceremony, aspecial cake decorated
with roses and suitable ins¢ription was cut and served by Mrs,
Al Sears along with coffee and
soda pop,
Any boy in the Penn Valley
and Rough and Ready area ‘is
invited to join the new scout
unit which meets each Wednesday evening at 7:30, Ready
Springs School To be eligible
to join scouts a boy must be 11
years old or older and have permission of his parents,
