Grass Valley, Nevada City And The
High School Will Stick With The Bus Pool
Members of the Grass Valley,
Nevada City and Nevada Union
High School board discussed
dissolution of the bus pool for
more than an hour and a half
Monday night and then decided
to leave things as they are for a
while,
There-was almost no discussion at all for the elementary
boards, meeting in the Hennessy School in Grass Valley,
were preparing to adjourn the
session because no one from the
high school board had arrived,
The full board arrived before
the gavel fell,
The meeting had been called
after NUHS Superintendent Gerald Gelatt suggested at a recent
transportation pool meeting that
the pool be disbanded,
Gelatt said he had suggested
that each district start scheduling and using its own buses to
transport its own children. The
bus garage on Bennett Street in
Grass Valley would still be available for maintenance and the
high school district would
hire ‘full time mechanics. The
cost of maintenance would be
$5 perhour. The pool buying of
7
fuel would also be continued.
He said that separate operation
would give each district more
flexibility in scheduling. He
cited the recent example of when
Grass Valley wanted to extend
its school day by one half hour,
Thishe said threw off the whole
schedule and although it has now
been worked out, it is a good
example of the troubles in the
past and what could happen again
in the future,
He suggested that with each
district operating its own buses,
Grass Valley, for instance could
lengthen itsschool day easier
and there would be more control
of the children onthe buses. The
biggest saving of the current
System which would be continued under the proposed system would be the maintenance
and bulk buying.
Trustees ofthe other boards
failed to see the need for the
-change. In addition to the
scheduling problems already
mentioned, Gelatt said that the
district had borne costs such as
the $6,000 installation ofa
hoist at the garage and were receiving penalities on state

Grass Valley School trustees,
who have been fuming in recent
weeks over the decision of the
Nevada Union High School District toséll the junior high school
building, were informed Monday
that the building could not be
sold because the high school district does not own it,
Grass Valley will now put the
matter into the hands of a private attorney to determine just
how both districts stand,
This opinion, which was dropped as somewhat of a bombNEVADA CITY sculptor, Norman Grag, looking all the world like

districts, was delivered at the
Grass Valley board meeting
Monday night by assistant county
counsel Brian Bishop,
The county counsel's office
hadbeen called in by both sides
several weeks ago to rule on
resolutions approved by both
boards to dissolve the junior high
school operation,
Grass Valley plannedto use the
building next year to house its
seventh and eighth grade students and stipulations setting up
athree year lease for the building with an option to renew or
buy at the end of this period were
included in the resolution to dissolve the junior high, This was
approved by both boards,
The high school district recent~ly published a legal notice of intention to sell the building and
reaffirmed the intention to sell
only at the last trustees meeting.
Monday night Bishop told the
Grass Valley board that a title
search of the property disclosed
that the use of the property had
been granted to the Grass Valley
High School District for high
school purposes by the Empire
New Verde Mining Co, The use
was subject to a reversionary
clause which stipulated if the
school was abandoned or put to
any other use, the property would
revert to the mining company.
In the light of this discovery,
Bishop said Monday, the property “can"t be sold, period.”
He added that the discovery of
this clause also throws some doubt
on the validity of appraisals the
high school district had made so
it could set a sale price for the
buildings,
He said he did not know whether
the building could be leased or
not, “but at the present timel
can assure you they can't sell it,

Fadel Gets Court Approval To Start
Work Again On Nevada City Freeway
Work on the Nevada City segment of the Grass Valley -Nevada
City Freeway is scheduled to resume sometime next week according to officials of prime
contractor Norman I, Fadel,
Inc,, of Linda,
The job has been shut down for
several months and the work was
on a slow basis for some time
previous to the final stoppage of
work due to the financial difficulties of the contractor,
Friday the Fadel organization
was notified by the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Sacramento that
the financing plan advanced by
the firm several weeks ago had
been approved by the creditors
and work on the project here
could commence again,
Fadel instituted bankruptcy
proceedings until Title 11 of the
Bankruptcy Act in December and
shortly after that offered creditors a plan by which, with
funds from the bonding company, all creditors would be paid
off and work on the job would
be allowed to continue, It was
this plan that was approved by
the court on Friday.
According to officials at
Fadel'‘s main office in Linda,
work could resume again on
Monday. This depends on the
weather andthe condition of the
ground,
First projects to get attention
will be the work on several
bridges and crossings along the
three and a half mile freeway
route, The firm hopes to start
w ork on the Washington Street
bridge, the Gold Flat Road bridge
and the Sacramento Street crossing.
Plans now call for completion
of the entire project on or about
