through dinner in the Grand Ballroom with 1458 others, until the wheel was turned that let the Alberta gas glow to old-fashioned gas lamps aroung the room---it was a. memorable five hours. Strange, whenever I've told of attending the dedication, the question is asked, "Why did yougo?".My answer, “Curiosity”.. I wanted to find out why Mr, and Mrs. had been invited..AndI found out, PG & E vice-president Bob ' Gros, one of the best public relations men in the business, acted as toastmaster. He explained the group was composed of civic leaders, governmental officials, firms directly connected with the construction, representative large PG&E customers, the press, and officials of the company itself.. Iwas pleased tonote the invitation to this Mr. and Mrs, came through c of c affiliations, and therefore we were there to represent you, the PG & E customer, as Gros pointed out..To you, dearreader and PG&E customer, thanks for being in need of representation, It was a pleasure, I must admit there was a second motive in my trip. With all this additional gas flowing into Northern California, Iwas hoping to find out when PG& Ewill extend its natural gas lineinto Western Nevada County.. But to find the right utility official from the 1500 in THE -_— el ye HOTEL in the heart of the MILE HIGH CITY 100 MODERN and COMFORTABLE ROOMS with TV and radio available For Businessmen and Tourists attendance proved to be too big a chore, so we relaxed tothe representative pose:of accepting a glass from one of the Fairmont army of men with green vests.,.In the ball room, however, we did see Nevada County residents EdKoster (NID) Tabe Bis — shop (supervisor and Union 76 dispenser), and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ingram (GV Union publisher). Theme of the dedication ceremonies (beyond the spinning of the wheel to turn the. gas. on). was the international coo peration displayed in the running of a private corporation's gas line through several’of the United States and two Canadian provinces,.The project drew Canadian praise from lanN, Mckinnon, chairman of the National Energy Board in Ottawo, and from ‘Dr, George W. Govier, acting: chairman of the Oil and Gas Conservation Board of the Province of Alberta.. Likewise, California Governor Edmund G, Brown . stressed the project was the result or cooperative actions by the private utility, as well as the international governing bodies, The line was accepted for public service by Govemor Brown. Dr. Govier, who has close relatives in San Jose, drew laughs from the audi— ence when he admitted having mixed feelings toward therain that greeted him on his arrival,. How wonderful that Ca lifornia should show such a need for heating fuel such as gas at a time when the line was due to be dedicated, he mused, .But ' thentheneighborly feeling of friendship between Californians and Canadians which has developed as they jointly worked on the project took hold of his thinking, and the good doctor offered to stop the flow of gas long enough to send some Alberta sunshine through the 36 inch pipeline.. All good fun. The massive pipeline was laid 1400 miles inl4 months, a feat that representatives from both sides of the border marveled to relate. It was little more than four years from idea stage to completion, aneven greater marvel considering the coordination necessary between private, public and international agencies, And another marvel: with 1500 inattendanc e, the steaks were hot and there was a CherriesJubilee Flambe dessert, SNOWBOUND,.Or should we say, ski-bound?, . It happened during the recent , Storm series when Highway 40 had been reduced toa single lane. The man stopped his car., the ten cars immediately -behind him stopped. Lead man got out of his car with a pair of skis in hand, and off he went. skiing may be fun for he who does, but for he who waits it's no good at all, As the traffic expandedto a halted line behind this car, the CHP finally arrived from the other direction. Skier still missing, the officers merely pushed his car intothe nearest snowbank and traffic began moving again. Delayed, but not denied. . While speaking of snowbanks, there is also the recent storm story of the snowplow driver whose rig was laid up while they removed the Volkswagon, or parts thereof, from the machinery..Seems he heard a crunch ashe passed this one snowbank, looked behind and saw a VW fender thrown with the plowed flakes, The VW, parked in the wrong place they say, had been covered with snow, It wasn't seen as the plow started to clear the road, until, ,.crunch, pines Nevada County Heath Deene as ip a affiliation with associations whose combined assets bd pattment should the con . j0, of Ga rbage: No person total more than $450 million.
