Editor-Manager Second class postage paid at Nevada City, Calif. Bart settled into prison with very little trouble. He made only one friend at San Quentin----and that was another bandit with a record and conviction from a Nevada County stage holdup and killing, This man's name was Dorsey. He had shot and killed banker WilliamF, Cummings on the stage from Moore's Flat in 1879. .. Let's digress from BB for a moment and take a look at the stage from Moore's Flat to Nevada City on that fateful day, Seated next to banker Cummings was a beautiful brunette. She was 19. She’was the school EDITORIAL Keep Post Office At Washington The government has been considering the closing of the Washington post office . Volume of business at the small community's post office has dropped considerably since Tahoe-Sugar Pine closed its sawmill operation. The figures show that consolidation with the Nevada City post office . would be an economy move by postal officials. Therefore those who oppose such a con. solidation should have good reason behind their arguments. We believe there are good reasons for maintaining the Washington post office--reasons above and beyond the retention of the county's third oldest post office merely as a monument to its namesake. Washington had been expected to become a ghost townuponthe closing of the sawmill operation. Suchhas not beenthe case. Instead it has become a gathering place for the retired and for those seeking recreationalactivities along the South Yuba and in the lower Sierra Nevada hills that surround the town. Washington's population is now sure to grow. Itis acommunity ina county of California where the population explosion is just beginning to jump at the rate of five . per cent per year. The people of the Washington area are now inthe process of forming a water district. Once formed, the district can offer newcomers tothe area one of the basic ingredients of growth---good water supply. Washington therefore can be expected to grow ata fasterrate thanthe whole of Nevada County. Washington is only a few miles upstream from the proposed Malakoff State Park, and there is talk of extending the park along tHe river upstream to the townsite boundary in order to make a trail available from that area to the park center. When Malakoff . elected. President-~TT erry becomes a state park, Washington will . at Oh ee benefit and grow---another reason to exberta Frost. The group also pect faster than normal growth in the small read a one-act play enticommunity of Washington. pe nchueca These we feel are good reasons WY (1 sent for the mudes body at Washington will gorw to fill the need for . a later date. the postal service they now have. But Sasi weiss are more. Nevada City's post office is already growing at arate which will make its present quarters too small within the next two to three years. Postmaster William Wasley revealed this at a recent Nevada City Lions Club meeting. If Washington's small postal volume were now added to Nevada City, itwouldbeamere drop inthe bucket, but that drop would hasten the day when a new Nevada City post office would be re. quired. Andas the Washington volume increased, the overload at Nevada City would arrive even sooner. . Further, the government is inthe process of a program of accelerated postal construction and modernization ordered by President Kennedy to stimulate the nation's economy andtoassist Postmaster General Edward Day in his program to provide the nation with the finest postal service in its history. A few feet from where this picture was taken was the spot where Black Bart had slept, wrote poetry and and quoted Shakespeare, We talked of stage robberies and of stage drivers. I told Frank of when I as a lad of 6 and 7 and rode high on the front seat on the stage to Graniteville or Washington close to my father Lon, Hoping, always hoping, that another Black Bart would be around the next turn, I would imagine silhouettes on the next knoll, my blood would freeze as I was sure! could hear a strong confident voice speak over a pointed shotgun "Throw the Box Down!" Frank and I know that that a man like Black Bart never dies, He is the stuff of which folklore is made, Seeeeeeeeeeeeneeesan Black Bart was captured in 1883, The handwriting that he had left behind as poetry in the strongboxes he had emptied was easy to compare and convict, On the robbery that convicted him, he had as usual found out in advance how much gold would be in the strongbox, He know how many passengers would be on the stage, He knew the box would be bolted down, inch of the road the stage would travel, So long before, the stage left he had walked to his chosen holdup spot But something had gone wrong as he spoke "Throw the box down,‘ One passenger, a young boy was not on the stage. Then on Nov, 8, 1888, the stage from Downieville to Nevada City was stopped on Ditch Hill near Nigger Tent by one man and robbed of $2, 200. Wells Fargo immediately investigated and they reported it had all the earmarks of BB, Then not long after that Nigger Tent holdup, Hattie Reader, Frank's young sister saw a man approach the front porch of the Reader home, Hattie was home aloné, No one was in shouting distance, She opened the door, Color left her pink cheeks, She was almost paralysed with fear, atapped be worth found next day, was the following, (fac simile) :— SP Agente of W., V. & Co. will ng} pent this circular, vs" pinoe them im tus bende of your local aad county Agents WILL PRESERVE a copy on file in their office. $800.00 Reward!
