10 The Nevada County Nugget Wed. Feb. 21, 1973 ca A VICTIM of the simulated accident drill held Sunday is placed on a stretcher _ put in an ambulance. Disaster drill tests efficiency of community It did not happen but it could have! At 2 p.m. Sunday there was.a “planned disaster’ in Nevada City to test the efficiency of community rescue and medical services in case of a disaster. The brakes of an ‘“‘imaginery”’ log truck failed and hit an ‘imaginery’’ school bus broadside at the intersection of Uren and B Streets. In startling makeup and simulating realistic groans the victims of the tragedy were strewn into the street. Robert Costley, administrator at Nevada General Hospital, said the hospital planned the mock disaster to test responses in case of a real emergency. He said the experiment was long overdo here: and described the response of the medical community, law enforcement, fire departments and ambulance services as “‘outstanding.”’ Costley and Mrs. Cleolue White, chief director of nurses at se) hospital wrote the scripi. Several doctors helped ig ‘hing: up the make believe juries. Bob Gamage of. the feyada Union High School epartment gave of his” ex‘riise. Participating as vi¢tims re five members of the NUHS Club and another five from e drama department: Hospital Stripers assistgd in the makeup department. Makeup included protruding plastic bones, appearances of grushed chests and blood from ch¢wed red capsules. The sher#ff’s department “alerted” all agencies at 2:04 p.m. and thg first victims were being treated at NGH by 2:19. Larry Filer, county disaster officer, waS quick to arrive as was Dr. Gregg Steber. Four other local doctors rushed to the hospital. / Streaking to the scene within minutes, were all county ambulances (Blake’s, Lincoln’s and Nevadd City’s two rescue cars), the Névada City and 49er fire departments, the Nevada City Polige Department, sheriff’s depyties and highway patrol officers. The Nevada City police, aided by other law enfofcement units, was in charge of traffic. There were four ‘“‘fatalities”’ and the other ‘‘victims’’ were treated for a variety of injuries ranging from shock to serious head and ‘chest injuries and multiple contusions. North south winners for Thursday were Betty WielandKathy’ Grande, Fawn Emmerling Irene Yelick and Marjorie Harrison Agnes Prisk. $150,000 suit for wrongful death filed Harvey H. and Rosalyn Gordon have filed a $150,000 wrongful death action as a result of a vehicular accident April 24, 1972, on Interstate 80 near Truckee. The Gordons are seeking the amount from Thomas Rex McCray. They contend McCray was responsible for an accident
April 24, 1972, on Int. 80 in which their son, Lyle, suffered fatal injuries. The complaint states the deceased was a passenger in the McCray vehicle. In, another action Ruth Shattuck is seeking $35,000 from Continental Trailways. A Superior Court complaint alleges that the transportation company was responsible for injuries she received in an accident Feb. 24, 1972: on Int. 80. The complaint states the bus collided with a truck between Sacramento and Reno. The ladies he enlists to help him in his efforts will be played by Laura Darzell, Joyce Kemper and Connie Hardison. — Science Fair set for March Nevada county’s seventh annual Science Fair will be held March 5 8 at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building. Manv local schools are holding school science fairs from which students will be named to enter their exhibits in the county fair. All public and private schools’ students in western Nevada County are eligible to participate. George Bryant, director of curriculum for the county ' schools, is chairman of the Science Fair committee. Working with Bryant will be George Marquard of Seven Hills School, Mary Stevens of Nevada City Elementary, Burle Shelton and Jack Murphy of Union Hill, Marilyn Prisk and Larry Rekers of Pleasant Ridge, Loveta Hornsby of Washington, Dave Vertin of Ready Springs, Tim Ackerman, Walt McNeal, Pat Sweetser and Taber Whittlesey . of Grass Valley, Hazek Shere of ~ Forest Lake Christian and ’ Palmer Smith of Nevada Union. Prizes for this year’s fair include savings bonds, trophies, medals and ribbons. The public is invited to visit the fair. .
