This week fifty years ago
The work of Lt. Albert Marley, aviator assigned to the flight
unit aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma, was said to possibly have
changed the entire defense plans of the United States Navy, according to radio reports heard in San Diego. During a mock attack
on the Panama Canal, he was catapulted from the deck of the
famous dreadnaught and theoretically blasted the Canal defenses
with bombs; working against the blockading fleet commanded by
Admiral McDonald.

Movie of the week was the
Through’’ which starred Norma
“‘six-hankie’’ special, ‘‘Smilin’
Talmadge. The plot-line was
described as follows: ‘‘A broken heart accounts for the deep pathos
and when the bitterness in an old man’s heart is swept away, and
young love triumphs, the performers respond in the old sweet song
of love. It is pure, innocent romance that the whole family can view
without blushing.” :

After a series of ‘‘lovers’ spats” a\reconciliation was finally
achieved between Pola Negri, famoUs—Polish actress, and
comedian Charlie Chaplain. They finally ‘“‘made up’’ and renewed
their engagement to wed — which had been announced the previous
Christmas. At that time, Chaplain told the world. . . “I’m the
happiest man in all creation right now.” ~
Charles Gaus ‘grand old
man of Malakoff’ dies
Charles C. Gaus, the ‘grand
old man of the Malakoff,’’ is
dead at the age of 94.
Mr. Gaus who was born in
North Bloomfield during the
roaring hydraulic era would
have been 95 March 6. He spent
a lifetime working in the gold
mines and the North Bloomfield
and Alleghany area. He was the
last of the Malakoff hydraulic
miners and the last member of
the North Bloomfield Masonic
Lodge. ;
“The grand old man of the
Malakoff,’’ who also wore official State Ranger Badge No. 1,
died Sunday in Holiday Hills
Convalescent Hospital. He lived
in his home in North Bloomfield,
which he built long before the ~
town became a part of the
Malakoff State Park until a
couple of years ago. He moved
to Nevada City to be with a
sister Rose Moyle, who survives
him.
Mr. Gaus started, as a water
boy in the mines and worked his
way to foreman. He was an
engineer in the Union Blue
Gravel Mine when wood burning
steam trains were used.
Mr. Gaus and his late wife,
Annie, at one time worked at the
Plumbago Mine in Alleghany.
He was foreman and she was
cook. His last employment was
with the county department of
public works, of which he was
foreman for 35 years in North
Bloomfield. :
When his home town became a
state park Mr. Gaus became its
staunchest supporter. He
donated more than 150 artifacts
to the ‘Annie Gaus Room’ which
is a part of the museum in the
park.
Charley was known as ‘“‘the
old ranger”’ to countless school
children who visited the park in
groups. He spun tales of the old
days for them and taught them
how: to. pan gold.
The State Department of
Parks — and Recreation
recognized his many contributions to the park several
years ago. The ‘‘grand old man
of the Malakoff” was presented
with Ranger Badge No. 1 at a
celebration in his honor in the
National Hotel Dining Room.
The native of North Bloomfield. was present at all
homecoming celebrations in the
park, and a focal point of the
parades when he headed them in
his well polished but ancient
vintage vehicle.
‘Welk performers’ plan
concert in Sacramento
Myron Floren, accordionist
and ‘‘right-hand’’man to
Lawrence Welk, will be
headlining a company of 13
‘Welk performers” in concert,
when they appear at the
Sacramento Memorial
Auditorium for one performance only at 3 p.m. on
Sunday, March 18.
Myron began playing the
accordion when he was seven
with one of Sears’ (then Sears
Roebuck ) better instruments for
$19.95. No teachers were
available. At the age of eight
Myron entertained crowds at the
Day. County Fair in his
hometown of Webster, South
Dakota. While in the third grade
he won first and second prize in
a local amateur contest playing
both piano and accordion. Since
that age, Myron’s audience has
advanced somewhat in size,
with the millions who have
watched the famous Lawrence
Welk Show on television.
’ When Lawrence Welk first
heard him play the accordion,
he recognized Myron Floren as a
virtuoso. Knowing how much an
accordion lends to a band, he
hired Myron Floren on the spot.
Many of his friends advised
against his decision, figuring
Welk would be eclipsed. That
was in 1950. Today, Myron
Floren has won over the critics,
has become assistant conductor
of the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, and is considered to be
the “‘headliner” in a company of
headliners.
Other featured Welk -performers to appear on this fast
moving show are America’s
popular dancers Bobby Burgess
and Cissy King; marimbistdancer Jack Imel; cellist
Charlotte Harris; tenor Jim
Roberts; tap dancer Art Duncan
and others for a total:of 13 Welk
performers.
Welk will not appear at this
performance.
All seats are reserved and now
available at the following
locations: Downtown Box Office, Public Market Building,
13th and Jay Streets,
Sacramento; Southgate Music;
