Teale Discusses The Mountain Tourist
Boom And The Need For Representatives
(Continued from Page 1)
with the park development on
paper for several years, but this
had been his first opportunity to
actually tour the site.
“Looking over Malakoff," Teale
said, “I believe you have perhaps
the finest potential, not only as a
park, but for augmenting your
Own economy, of any county in
the state,"
He praised the local citizens
and the legislators for bringing
the new park into the state park
system.

Is A Candidate
Nevada County Treasurer-T ax
Collector LelandJ, (Lee) Twitchell Wednesday announced his
candidacy for re-election at the
June primary.
The incumbent entered employment in the Treasurer-Tax
“You siezed on an opportunity
that only happens once, You
will find in the next ten to 20
years that if you had not siezed
the opportunity people would be
here anyway to see it. Because
you did get it into the state park
system, you will get more benefit
from it. “
The senator stressed the importance of the growth of the recreation business saying there is a
vast, disenchanted urban popu-~

looking for open space and we
have it in the Sierra.
This constantly moving group
brings an enormous amount of
business tothe small Sierra town,
“but if you are not prepared for
them they are there anyway and
that creates problems. "
“It will take a lot of imagination, nerve and salesmanship to
deal with these problems, “ he
said, “andto force the realization
on the new legislators to maximize the effects of the mobility
of people on the local towns and
to prevent stagnation and bottlenecks from developing. “
Teale, who was chairman of
the controversial Senate reapportionment committee and author
of the plan recently approved by
the courts said it was a thankless
job, but he took it “to prevent
the rural areas from being
swallowed up.”
He noted that the representatives from the metropolitan
areas do not understand the
problems of the mountain
counties, He concluded that
whoever gets the job of representing the big new third district
in the future will have a tremendous job.
Teale was introduced by Nevada
City Councilman Bob Paine who
acted as unofficial master of
ceremonies at the large gathering
of government officials and interested civic leaders,
