February 3, 1966.. 3 Teale Discusses The Mountain Tourist Boom And The Need For Representatives (Continued from Page 1) with the park development on paper for several years, but this had been his first opportunity to actually tour the site. “Looking over Malakoff," Teale said, “I believe you have perhaps the finest potential, not only as a park, but for augmenting your Own economy, of any county in the state," He praised the local citizens and the legislators for bringing the new park into the state park system. Lee Twitchell Is A Candidate Nevada County Treasurer-T ax Collector LelandJ, (Lee) Twitchell Wednesday announced his candidacy for re-election at the June primary. The incumbent entered employment in the Treasurer-Tax “You siezed on an opportunity that only happens once, You will find in the next ten to 20 years that if you had not siezed the opportunity people would be here anyway to see it. Because you did get it into the state park system, you will get more benefit from it. “ The senator stressed the importance of the growth of the recreation business saying there is a vast, disenchanted urban popu-~ lation constantly on the move looking for open space and we have it in the Sierra. This constantly moving group brings an enormous amount of business tothe small Sierra town, “but if you are not prepared for them they are there anyway and that creates problems. " “It will take a lot of imagination, nerve and salesmanship to deal with these problems, “ he said, “andto force the realization on the new legislators to maximize the effects of the mobility of people on the local towns and to prevent stagnation and bottlenecks from developing. “ Teale, who was chairman of the controversial Senate reapportionment committee and author of the plan recently approved by the courts said it was a thankless job, but he took it “to prevent the rural areas from being swallowed up.” He noted that the representatives from the metropolitan areas do not understand the problems of the mountain counties, He concluded that whoever gets the job of representing the big new third district in the future will have a tremendous job. Teale was introduced by Nevada City Councilman Bob Paine who acted as unofficial master of ceremonies at the large gathering of government officials and interested civic leaders, simplicity .....
