ee ae at 9:30, NORTHERN MINES & CALIFORNIA REPORTS Ea 6+ HEI Et et SE 6 FEU bee ey gp FE ee EY Another Old Part Of The Local Scene Falls Before The Wreckers As The Plaza Ice House Ils Demolished No one knows the exact age of the old icehouse on the Plaza in «Nevada City.’ The late Frank Gunther, one time bookkeeper for the firm said that he remembered it as a small boy and believes it dates tothe late 1860's or early 1870's, It was probably built by the Nevada and Mountain Lake Ice Company which harvested ice in the ponds of the Blue Tent area. It really doesn ‘t matter because the ancient frame structure has outlived its usefulness and has been consigned to the wreckers by the present owner. Time was when production of ice in Nevada County was quite a going business, At Boca, near Truckee, a huge operation was carried on with a large portion of the output going to San Francisco. Locally, a seasons ice supply was cut at the ponds of Brimjohn and Sauvee in the Rock CreekBlue T ent district. Victor Sauvee gained control of the local distribution setup in the 1880°s and and on his death it passed to his son A, V. Sauvee, In the early 1930's mechanical refrigeration began to make great inroads in the ice business and the familiar ice man making his neighborhood rounds was soon to become a memory. More recently the ice house was put back in use, this time as a theater. In 1962a locally written musical about the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad was staged in the old building with enormous success as part of the Nevada City July Fourth celebration. The enthusiasm generated bythat production among the audience and the cast, helped to lay the groundwork for the formation of the Nevada City Liberal Arts Commission last year and the Commission's successful 100th anniversary production of "Golden Days” inthe old Nevada Theater. The tradition has been carried on anda fund drive is now underway toraise funds to purchase the theater, County 4-H Clubs Eehedule Annual Demonstration Day The Nevada County 4-H Demonstration Field Day will be held Saturday, February 19 at the Nevada Union Senior High School according to co-chairmen Margaret and Robert Paasch, Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m., with a general assembly Presentations in all areas will start at 10:00 a.m, Demonstrations and illustrated talks will be given on foods and nutrition, clothing, home furnishing and home management, livestock, other animals, crops and other agriculture, agricul~tural engineering, and activities, Presentations will be by individuals and teams of two, Each presentation will be judged and the blue and gold seal winners will be eligible to compete in the regional field day whichwill be held on the University of Califomia Davis campus, April 16, The Nevada County 4-H Club Council offers cash prizes to the three clubs having the highest percentage of their members participating.
