Sierra Opens With
2600 Enrollment
More than 2600 day and
evening students began spring
semester studies at Sierra College
this week, the heaviest spring
enrollment in history despite a
slightly lower day enrollment
than expected,
Registrar Martin T ay lor cited
the Viet Nam war and drafts as
“probable cause ™ of the loss of
some 75 students in day classes,
Day enrollment totals 1475, as
against 1364 a year ago, Taylor
said. However, enrollment expectations had been for 1500-1550
because of the heavy fall day
enrollment, a record 1688.
According to Taylor, neighboring Los Rios junior college
district also reported a similar’
drop.
Evening classes at Sierra will
probably almost equal the fall
total of 1200, according to Frank
Van Vliet, director of that program. Twenty-five of the 40
classes offered were closed out
with capacity enrollments last
week and all are expected to be
near capacity as classes‘begin
this week,
Some 1279 of the spring students
in day classes are returning from
the fall term, while 163 are new
students-or those continuing after
a layoff. Only 30 are parttime
and only three restricted students,
