NU summer
recreation
program
Nevada Union High probably
won't have’ a summer school
this year but will have supervised recreation.
This was the preliminary indication Monday night as Supt.
Gerald Gelatt discussed plans
with the trustees.
Both the idea of adding supervised recreation and dropping
summer school have been raised
in the past.
A member of the school's
physical education department
probably will be hired to watch
over the athletic fields and gym,
organize programs for both
youths and adults and possibly
do some coaching.
Board Chairman Charles
Allert sees this as an initial
step toward a possible recre-ation district in the Golden Empire.
NU officials have talked before of having supervised recreation to make full use of the .
new athletic facilities at the
Ridge Road campus. They had
to build a fence around the
turfs to deter vandals and said
then that controlled recreation
would be provided.
Gelatt said the community

be eliminated because it is costing the district money and is
being used by some students to
finish high school a semester
early. This indirectly costs the
district more due to loss of atendance each spring.
Gelatt said summer school
expenses run $12,000 to $15,000
but attendance income from the
state hasn't quite reached $7,500
at $125 per student. With about
400 students in the summer pro. gram, the district gets an av‘erage daily attendance increase
of 60 figured on a full-year
basis.
Thus, several thousand dollars of summer school expense
are financed by the district's
general fund, money Gelatt
pointed out is needed for the
regular school year's education.
"It's simply finances that have
swayed me," he said in recommending against a 1971 summer
school. "It might be that a little
rest wouldn't hurt anyway."
