Conservation Council Jan. 28.
Nevada Irrigation District Manager Edwin Koster who attended
the session to answer questions on
the district's Yuba-Bear River
project reservoirs, said that although the district plans to construct recreation facilities at the
reservoirs with funds from a state
Davis-Grunsky grant, the district
is primarily in the water and not
the recreation business, He suggested that the district would welcome a county recreation program that would oversee operation and maintenance of the new
district recreation facilities, He
noted that many inquiries had already been received from private
parties wishing to lease the new
recreation facilities,
Nevada County Supervisor Neil
Hennessy agreed with council
members that a county“recreation
program was necessary. Leonard
Luglan, chairman of the council's
recreation committee, said that
in the near future California Youth
Authority boys based at a new
camp to be buily at Stockton,
will be available locally for work
on campgrounds, road clearing
and other public projects,
Game Warden Jack Witwer
stated that the county should have
a recreation commission with a
paid director in order to be eligible for funds available from
Various sources andalso to coordinate recreation in the county,
This discussion at the Conservation Council became the
springboard for the action of the
supervisors Monday, ;
Chairman Gene Ricker announced thatthe minimum
$75,000 from the state's $150
million beaches and parks bond
issue had been set aside for Nevada County and he wanted to know
what the county was going to do
with it.
Hennessy briefly outlined the
discussions at the Conservation
Council meeting. He asked that
a study group be established to
examine the possibility of forming a recreation district.
Hennessy and Ricker were.
named as representatives of the
board to meet with Conservation
Council president Harry Hyatt,
representatives of the Nevada Irrigation District and both the California Division of Forestry and the
