February 4, 1965..Nevada County Nugget.. QU A BIE HEISE EE ee EEE H+ FEE OE ed oP Et . Auburn Bridge To Be Used [TII. . NI\= Following an intensive field investigation and engineering evaluation, state highway officials announced that limited andemer gency use will be made of the old railroad bridge over the American River about two miles east of Auburn, The Highway 49 bridge was washed away Dec, 23 by the failure of the partly completed Hell Hole dam, Permanent repairs, _how underway, are expected to be completed in April. Commuters between Aubum and the Cool-Georgetown area now have an 80-mile round-trip detour around the south end of Folsom Lake, Numerous persons are walking across. the abandoned bridge, built by a cement company early in the century. The field inspection was made last week by state highway engineers in cooperation with local interests, The California Highway Patrol has also investigated the proposal from the standpoint of safety. Only jeeps and pickup trucks willbe permitted to use the temporary emergency route. W.L, Warren, highway district engineer of Marysville, said the old bridge is too narrow, and the proposed gravel and rock grade too steep for loaded trucks and buses, A connection from Highway 49 will be built from either side of the river. However, Warren said, necessary sharp switchbacks and grades of up to 12 percent will make the approaches unsafe for school buses, trucks and passenger cars. The.narrowness of the route will limit its.use to one-way traffic which will‘be screened and conNevada County Will Receive $3,460.20 A total of $12,478, 269 has been apportioned among California's cities and counties as their share of revenue from State motor vehicle license fees, State Controller Alan Cranston reported today. This is the first of three apportionments to be made during the 1964-65 fiscal year and represents revenue from fees collected from June 1 to November 30, 1964, Apportionments to be made in April and June will be larger. A total of $3,460.62 was apportionedto Nevada County with $2,345.30 going to Grass Valley and $1,115.32 to Nevada City. Cranston explained that all but a minor portion of motor vehicle license fees goes to local governments because the tax takes the place of a local property tax on motor vehicles, State law requires deductions from the total collections to cover interest charges on highway bonds and for support of the Department of Motor Vehicles license fee division. The Controller pointed out that there isno State restriction on the money other than that the cities and counties use it for general public purposes. trolled at each end. Itwill be open during daylight hours only, Nighttime use would be too hazardous to consider. Warren said the cost of a temporary road to accommodate all types of vehicles would be prohibitive for short term use. On the bridge, the-central portion of the existing ballast will be lowered by removal to leave a protective curbing and chain link fencing will be installed to delineate the roadway. Work is expected to get started immediately following lease arrangements with property owners. Construction could be done in a week or so, depending on the amount of rock encountered and the weather. HOLLIS BENTLEY Bogus Burke Frightens City NEVADA 1864 Thomas Burke was intown. The alarm was whispered through the streets. Thomas Burke had been seen in the Bennet Hotel on Main Street. It was evening and the sheriff wasn't at his home or office and
no-where could the frightened townsmen find a deputy. They crept around the Bennet Hotel and peered in through the windows. They spotted Burke in the kitchen sitting with his feet on the stove fender and his back to the window. If Burke hadn't had the reputation as the most bloodthirsty and most slippery outlaw in California one of the shadow creepers might have found the courage to shoot him in the back. As it was they went on searching for the sheriff and watching. Burke had killed a man in a saloon in Grass Valley and then escaped before trial from the county jail. They say he'd escaped from every jail from Mexico to Montana and committed horrible crimes both getting in and out of the jails. The sheriff andhis deputy were found at the theatre. The whole town drew in its breath and hid behind pulled curtains as the two law men walked through the streets. The news of what happened didn't travel.as quickly as that of the outlaw's arrival and since there were no gun shots to help broadcast the events most of the residents didn't know what happened until morning, The answer they got in most cases was a shrug of the shoulders and the quick reply: It wasn't Burke afterall. The man at the stove wasa mild mannered Frenchman who showed mild astonishment when confronted with the sheriff's gun and wisdom enough not to laugh in the lawman's and the town's faces.
