Superintendent Bradley’s sworn réport of the -operations duting= the month of November at the Spanish quartz mine in Washington district, this county, is surprising. It proves beyond dispute that-ore yielding only . 65 cents worth of gold per ton can be worked to a profit. The ore is very “soft, and, this fact has an it) portant bearing on its cheap reduction. Miners who own claims of low-grade ore eught to feel encouraged. at reading of these results. Sliding Down Hill. ~ Young people and old in great numbers, were having «a grand time Saturday night sliding down hill at this city. Broad street had not been so “‘glarry”’ before within the memory of the oldest inhabitant. The coasters staried up by the Methodist church and would come flying down the grade like the wind, warning pedestrians, other coasters and teams of their approach by the blare of horns, the jingle of bells or by ear-splitting shouts, -They did not stop till they crossed the Plaza und Barton’s blacksmith shop was reached. The fastest and most generally used course was right down Broad street, which was brilliantly illuminated by the electric lights. Many however got longer rides by “turning into Pine street at Blumenthal’s corner, then down Commercial and Main to the Union Hotel. The latter route has not been navigable for sleds before so far as anybody has] reported. Board of Supervisors. Z.PL Davis used-te-have a thermometer here and kept close wate!) of it from day today. One night the mercury got down ten degrees below zero. I walked up here from Grass Valley that night and one of my ears got frosibitten.” “T remember that very time,’’daid constable Scott, ‘‘Some. of -us boys were mining down at Rough & Ready and thé water froze in our sluices that iran alongside tine creek.”’ Last Friday night: was unquestionable about as chilly as anything this part of the State has experienced in Io.iny days. But it was much colder here in the basin where Ne¥ada City stands than in™the more elevated local.ties. In some places about town the thermometers: indicated one or two degrees below zero. At Quaker Hill it stood 18 degrees above sero, and-at Houston’s farm and various other ridge places about the same. At Town Talk it was sixteen degees above. The heaviest frosts are found along the streams, and land-owners nowadays who understand their business plant their orchards and vineyards on the hillsides. In-early times the low-lying flats close to running water were picked out for this purpose, but the results have not beensuch as to perpetuate the practice. Alleged Remedy For Smalipox. Edward Hine, a correspondent of the Liverpool Mercury, wrote as follows to that papér: “Iam willing to risk my_ reputation as a public man-if the worst case of smallpox cannot be effec‘ually cured, in three days, simply by cream of.tartar. This is the sure and never failing remedy: ‘One ounee of cream of tartar, dissolved:in a pint of boiling water, to be drank when cool, at short intervals, It can be taken at any time, and is a preventive and curative.’ It is known ta fiave cured a hundred thousand cages, Withouta failure. I have restored hundreds by this means. It‘ever leaves a mark or causes blindness, and always pprevents tedious lingerings. If the people would only try it and report all the cures to you, many columns would be needed to give them publicity.” + 0@ ee Completed Last Evening. The examination of Hicks and Beardsley on a charge of stealing E. P. Gaylord’s watch was, commenced Saturday evening before Justice Sowden, District Attorney Long appeared for the prosecution, A. D. Georgie Hanson Was Hurt. The Grass Valley Union of Sunday morning says: ‘About 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon George Hanson, a lad aged about 12 years, met with an accident while coasting down the sidewalk on Neal street, which will probably prove fatal. The lad had been told by his sister; Miss Lena to go to the butcher shop for meat, and left the house. In ashort time Miss Lena went out to the gate to see if George was not among a crowd of boys coast> ing on the sidewalk. The young lady had barely reached the gate when she saw her: brother, descending the hill on a sled running at lightning speed, cart belonging to © ’Farrell drawn by @ young horse; nearing the walk, It was evident that the sled and horse would meet, and ‘all who saw the approaching sled gazed with horror, and shouted a warning, but it was too late. The sled struck the animal’sfeet, which frightened him; and he began plunging and kicking, striking the un fortunate boy in the head, badly frac.turing the skull, and knocking him senseless. Blood spurted from the wound in profusion, and the little sufferer was carried into the house.—_Dr. Jones-was-called and gave him temporary relief. Ina short time George returned to’ consciousness, and when our reporter called was resting comparatively easy. A host of friends were at the house to render any necessary service. The skull is pressing on the brain, and the doctor saya it wit have to be trepanned, and the chancea_of recovering are doubtful. A. H.
