CLAIR ENGLE
Senator Clair Engle may have
been deserted by leaders of the
Democratic Party in California
who fear that his health would not
allow him to make an active
Proms 273-078" ¥
campaign for reelection, but-a
band of "Green Mountain Boys”
have launched a determined drive
to keep the senator in office.
The non-partisan campaign in
the mountain counties began last
week with the launching of a
“Dollars for Engle" drive to raise
funds to carry Engle through the"
primary fight.
Archie Stevenot heads the
"Green Mountain Boys" organiza~
tion, and-Paul Claiborne, president of Placer Savings and Loan
Co. in Auburn, is vice-president.
"A lot of people seem to be
forgetting what Clair Engle has
done for California---and the
mountain regions in particular--~
on the national level since 1943, "
Stevenot said.
dorse For Assembly
"The bulk of the progress that
our area has enjoyed over the past
20 years is due largely to his efforts.
“Clair has said he'll be able to
campaign and to serve at least
another six-years. His doctors
have given him the green light.
That's good enough for me!"
Stevenot urged all mountain
residents to kick off the "Dollars
for Engle" drive by sending their
money to Claiborne at Central
Square in Auburn. Checks should
be made out to "Dollars for
Engle”.
Engle, who underwent brain
surgery last summer, hasbeen re~
cuperating and has been able to
take his seat in the Senate on
several occasions recently.
