The directors reaffirmed the chamber's plans to sponsor the annual Fourth of July Celebration, and chairman Ralph Friedrich said there have been four suggestions astotheme. Plans for the celebration are already being investigated. The directors also reaffirmed the chamber's plans to sponsor the Fourth Annual Tour of Nevada City bicycle race Fathers Day, It was indicated that a member of thechamber will be appointed at the next meeting, Feb. 17. The directors laid over until Feb. 17 a decision on whether to co-sponsor this year's junior rodeo, but indications are that the answer will be affirmative. In addition, directors set May asthe month for a chamber dinner to honér Mothers Day. Plans for the event will be finalized in the near future. The chamber also will seek the aid of Tahoe National Forest and Washington Ridge Conservation Camp forthe location and clearing of riding and hiking trails which could be easily accessible from Nevada City. Directors laid aside for two weeks a discussion of parking problems in the city, but indicated that the chamber and merchants should begin immediately to find ways and means to improve the local parking situation. President John Reed and the directors commended Thelma Nelson for offering to assist the group in office work. Others who desire to help are asked to contact office manager Al Donnells. The new office and warehouse space wil e occupied mainly by the Alpha Industrial Supply division, which provides major wholesale servicing in three departments: logging and sawmill supply, construction supply, and the new chemical supply. Added pace and improved facilities will then be available -for-garden, hardware, and all other retail sales, and for parking. Site preparation for the new construction is being handled by HansenBros., while construction will be the responsibility of Spanda/Industrial of Sacramento. The site preparation job isa major one involving the removal of existing foundations, cutting through solid outcroppings at the rear of the Inter-County property, relocating a city sewer line and bridging a city drain which flows through the property, and a considerable amount of leveling. Clinch noted that other aspects of Alpha's operation were being modernized--namely, the bookkeeping unit, which has entered the electronic age with the use of punch-tapes. Data on accounts payable and receivable will be punched ontape at the Alpha office on special machines, and handed to accountant Thomas Taylor for translation via computer into recognizable Alpha statements and checks, Alpha took over its present Nevada City site from Hennessy livery stables in 1917.
