road projects
get approval
Three Nevada County projects
were among those approved by
.the State Department of Public
Works this month as part of $6
million allocated to correct
areas with high accident rates.
The widening of Highway 20
west of the Bear River is one of
the projects and includes
trimming back the cut banks of
the highway to increase the
sight distance of motorists. The
project is estimated to cost
$100,000.
’ Also included in the budget is
the realignment of the connection between Highway 20 and
Squirrel Creek Road near the
west city limit of Grass Valley to
provide a better angle of intersection, and construction of a
left-turn storage lane. for
westbound traffic. This project
will cost $17,000.
The third county project is the
realignment of the connection
between Colfax Highway and
East Empire Street just east of
Grass Valley.

In the historic “mining era”’
Empire Hotel, out in the old
Boston Ravine at the end of. Mill
Street in Grass Valley, you can
now dine in a quietly plush atmosphere, from a menu
featuring your favorites among
American, Spanish or Italian
dishes.
Dinner is served from 4
m., luncheons between 11:30
a.m. and 2 p.m. A complete
catering service is also
available to your home, office or
meeting place and their
banquet room is beautiful! This
facility seats 150 and has a
public address system.
The Empire was once, long,
long ago, a boarding house for
miners. Now, there are no
longer any rooms for rent, but
the food is certainly .an improvement over that served
back in the days of gold.
All it takes is one visit to the
Empire, and you'll be a
“regular” there, we are sure.

celebrities from all walks of life
and the aura of their vibrant
personalities may still be felt by
history-conscious visitors today.
Aside from an excellent buffet
and dinner menu, guests may
also partake of their favorite
beverages in the stunning old
lounge. Here they’ll find the
handsome back bar from the
“famous Nob Hill mansion owned
by the noted Spreckles Sugar
Company family. This fabulous
bar is one of the finest examples
of Early American cabinet work
in all of California.
The hotel accommodations
are elegantly Victorian yet
totally modern from the
utilitarian standpoint which is
traveling hither and yon. A stay
at this fine hostelry is really a
“must”’ for visitors in Western
Nevada County.
