The Penn Valley Eine
Church appearsregularly in this
column because it is one of the
major centers of social activity
in this progressive and friendly
area, The following is an account of a few things that are
underway and on the agenda for
the near future. An intensive
effort is being made now to
ready the building for an earlierthan-usual Easter this year, by
interior painting. If sufficient
funds become available, a
wall-to-wall carpet will be installed over the present concrete
floor. A Boys Brigade Battalion
is soon to be organized and
sponsored by the church membersand friends. The Boys
Brigade program is similar to
the. Boy Scout program, but the
emphasis of the training is
placed upon spiritual growth
and healthy moralattitudes, It
is led by at least two men a
Captain anda lieutenant, This
church was also chosen to be the
hosting church for the 150th
anniversary observance of the
American Sunday School Union,
which will be held soon here in
Penn Valley.

Mr, Jack Planchon is hoping to
go fishing sometime this winter
along the balmy west coast of
Mexico, Infact, a small number of Penn Valley men would
like to pool their resources and
make a group venture out of
this. Part of the reason for this
planned trip, according to Jack
is to temporarily escape from
the present rainy and chilling
weather which we are experiencing, here.

To the Boy Scouts of America
and Their Leaders,
Every society has vested its
hope for tomorrow in the caliber of its youth, For youngsters
without purpose or inspiration
will grow into a generation
without leadership or concern,
Young men must be trained
well in the duties and opportunities of citizenship, They
must develop strength of character and an intense loyalty to
the institutions of freedom,
They mustbe physically fit and
mentally keen, ~
The Boy Scouts of America
adopt these qualities as goals,
Boy Scout Week calls our attention to the wholesome influence of Scouting on the lives
of millions of Americans--and thus on our progress as a
nation, It also is an occasion
for commending the volunteers
and sponsors who sustain the
Boy Scout movement,
And in this. special year, I
want to join in welcoming
Scouts of other lands to the
United States, I trust that the

many nations the desire for understanding and passion for
peace upon which rests the future of all men,

"Our Town" is a wonderful
town, Perhaps I should say the
people in it are wonderful,
Rough and Ready'‘s infant fire
department had, among its
other problems, the need for a
home for its fire truck, The
poor thing had been standing out
__in the weather for several years,
which doesn’t make for happy
machinery or for sure starts in
time of need, Just when Dale
Haines, fire chief and mechanic, had about given up the
good fight, along came Jack
Bixler with the whole solution,
He had a lovely big chicken
house that we could use if we
wanted, It is right in the center of town and all it needed
was a little gravel on the
driveway in case of heavy rain,
We wanted!
