Wanted: A Cavalcade!
By Doris Foley
Of all_the applications for
projects received by the Nevada
County . Bicentennial Commission, there has not been one
to depict a . County
extranvaganza. It is hoped that ©
some community group will
celebrate the 1976 Bicentennial
year with an_ elaborate
cavalcade reminiscent of the
one sponsored by the Grass
Valley Chamber of Commerce
in 1947 at Hennessy Field. This
event was staged for the 49er
Frontier Celebration on July 3rd
and 4th:of that year.
The festival chairman was
Earl Covey, and Elmer Stevents
wrote the GOLD DAYS script, a
memorial of the colorful days of
California’s gold rush. Ted

produced and directed the
pageant. Under the capable
hands of three men the
performance ved an outstanding success.
It was divided into five
dramatic episodes, the first
being The Boston Party arriving
in the ravine named for them,
and where McKnight discovered
®gold-in rock on Gold Mountain
and touched off the great quartz
mining industry. Episode Two
depicted Lola Montez, portrayed
by Margaret Kronemeyer,
_entertaining notible personages
in~her Mill Street home, and
showing little Lotta Crabtree a
few dance steps:-Episode Three
relived again the panic-caused
by the closing of the Eureka
. Mine and Alonzo Delano’s (Old
Block) restoration of confidence
in Grass Valley. Episode Four
dealt with the Independent
“State of Rough and Ready,
which after five months hoisted
the Stars and Stripes to
celebrate the Fourth of July.
The last episode was the advent
of the Cornish miner, bringing
with him his traditions, sense of
humor and song. Richard Jose;
silver tener joined the miners in
chorus.
Voices had been recorded and
amplified over Hennessy Field
and were distinctly heard.
Local people who participated
and are still residing in Nevada
County are Earl Covey, Elmer
Stevens, Margaret Kronemeyer;
as Lola Montez;. William
Esterley as Senator Stewart;
Jack Hansen, Clyde Rosewall,
William Esterley Jr., and Tom
Bryan as Cornish miners; Betty
Jo Majors (Long) as the pioneer
woman; Harold Berliner, voice
portrayal; Doris Foley,
costumes; Dance routines under
the direction of Dorothy Dyke,
were Thelma and Bob Gates,
Lee Bostwick, Grace Raymond,
Maxine Sleeper, Becky and
‘Ralph Alderman.
At.the time Elmer Stevens
wrote the script it was his desire
that as olr-centennial years
arrived, the ideas portrayed in
the pageant could be enlarged,
so that all of us may live again
“the days of old, the days of
gold, the-days of Forty-Nine.”
His experience~at_writing and
