I arrived here Thursday and we im
ly took off for a holiday in what Los
Angeles calls the Southland. We spent three
days in San Diego and two on the High Desert.
They were so packed with things I had wanted to
know it now.
We saw the Koala bears high up in their
eucalyptus grove. It’s true they aren’t true
bears. They were so still they seemed more like
little mummies than real live animals. We also
saw lots of true bears including a beautiful pair
of Polar Bears. Their Arctic setting is partially
refrigerated though it is open to the atmosphere
around it. I loved Animal Park. You ride a tram
around an entire valley. In this valley roam, in
separated groups, prides of lions, whatever

distant members of the family throughout my
visit and for them the rest of this year. It’s
wonderful!
I hope you will enjoy some stories of the
things we did. We spent the first three days at
the Hotel Del Coronado. For you history buffs
this is pure enchantment. We lived in the
luxurious new: wing where our patio opened
almost onto the ocean. We dined in the historic
Coronet Room with the world . famous
chandeliers designed like enormous crowns. The
hotel was built in 1887 by Elisha Babcock and H.
L. Story of Chicago and designed by architects
James and Reed also from the east. There
is a
gorgeous crystal chandelier in the lobby but I
missed its history. The Del’s State Landmark
Plaque reads ‘“‘
Victorian Hotel, built in
1887, is one of
ica’s largest wooden
buildings. Few seaside. resort hotels of this
significant architectural style remain in
America. The hotel has hosted several
presidents and other national figures.” The
ceiling in the ballroom
is 31 feet high. The hotel
was in its festive Christmas dress for us which
increased its candle lighted beauty.
To reach The Del you cross a bit of modern
history. The San Diego Coronado Bridge. It is
2.2 miles long and curves out in the middle. of
itself to reach the island of Coronado. From its
apogee looking out toward the Pacific you can
see The Del which resembles an old time Castle
with all its “turrets, tall cupolas, hand-carved
wooden pillars, and Victorian gingerbread’’.
We also saw the bridge from the Point Loma
Lighthouse. We went there to see the historic old —
lighthouse and the migration of the gray whales.
‘Nary a whale in sight but Cabrillo National
Monument is worth a second look any time.
They have restored old Captain Israels quarters

life is presented in a series of shows in
various buildings and ampitheaters. We_petted
and yes TALKED to Dolphins, we watched Pearl
divers in the Japanese Gardens. We petted
walrus with new babies which we were not
allowed to pet. We saw dolphins and whales do
absolutely unbelievable things on command
from their trainers. We saw parades of
penguins. The trainer said after four years they
had finally learned to walk in a'line on one door
and out the other. He had seals that did almost
everything. It’s a very worthwhile experience.
The real climax to our little Christmas
vacation was our trip to the High Desert. We
stayed overnight in Twenty Nine Palms where
my aunt owns property. It was clear cold and
gorgeous. It was a perfect setting for the
Heavenly Miracle and gave mea feeling of great
reverence. We were brought roughly. back to
earth by a bit of car trouble and the need to
replace the fuel pump. It was easy. On our way
home, just out of Palm Springs, we had another
grand adventure.
We took the Aerial Tramway to the top of
Mt. San Jacinto. You start at about sea level and
reach 8500 feet in 13 minutes. Sixty-eight people
in a glass enclosed
(it was said to hold 80) stood

side. There were 5 ‘supports’ (sorry, I’m sure
