i Purchase Into Collection NEVADA CIT Y---Little did Ray Polk, president of pes dn County Historical Society dream that an expenditure of 50 cents made 24 years ago would start him on the fasci hobby of bell collecting. It was while looking over some itemsina second hand store in Grass Valley that Polk came across a rather odd looking bell, The bell proved to be a wagon bell used by a local teamster, From this first be11 which cost 50 cents a collection was started which now contains more than 375 pieces, Polk has bells from all over the world ---wood, ceramic, iron, brass and bell metal, According to Polk each bell maker has his own i ceeiieaiaititien . % favorite formula for compounding bell metal, All agree that the best tone comes from a mixture of approximately one part tin to three ‘parts copper, The oldest bell in the coldates back to 1100 AD, It is about aninch tall and made of brass, Polk received it from an archaeologist friend who excavated it from a tomb in the Yucatan, Those whocollect or study bells are known as campanologists or tintinnabulists. Regardless which you choose tocall a collector it's quite a mouthful, Polk knows the history. of each bell in his collection, However there is one that he isnot quite sure of. The bell is of brass about five inches tall with a fluffy cloth tassel on top, On the side isa crest believed to be that of the infamous Medici family. Polk figures the bell was used tocall servants and the tassel served to keep royal hands from grasping cold metal, Boat Show Starts Feb. 2 SAN FRANCISCO --The Province of British Columbia will participate in the San Francisco National Sports and Boat Show to be held February 2-ll at the Cow Palace, according to an announcement made here by Newton P, Steacy, Commissioner for the Government of British Columbia. Dept. of Water Resources Photo Half Million Dollar Map Surveying Slated This Year In Second District WASHINGTON ---In this day when anyone can pick up aroad map at the nearest gas station one does not realizethat detailed topographic maps of all parts of the country might not be available. Actually, thisis the case, however, with detailed one inch'to the mile scale maps completed for only two thirds of the nation. California is among the leaders in the national topographic mapping program, however, because of the long standing cooperation ofthe State Government. More than 25 per cent of the $1, 263,000 which will be spent this year in the 19 counties of the Second, mountain-valley, Congressional District by the Geological Survey will be for topographic surveys and mapping, according to Congressman Harold T. "Bizz" Johnson, Other money will be for geologic and mineral resource surveys and mapping and water resource investigations, More than half of the California mapping projects will be in the Second District. It is estimated that federal expenditures for this purpose Leland Suponch in California will be $780, 000, of which $486, 000 will be spent inthe 19 mountainvalley counties. Statewide, California will ‘contribute $330 ,000 tothe work making a total mapping program of more than $1,110,000. Throughout California, 96 per cent of the mapping work has been completed, with the balance to be finished by the end of fiscalyear 1964, The national topographic mapping program in California has been expedited tremendously by the State's participation, Fine cooperation between State and Federal government has existed since 1904, which has resulted in the fact that California ranks high in coverage as compared to the rest of the nation which is only 61 per cent covered by adequate topographic maps. At the present level of appropriations it is not expected’ that the national job will be completed before 1980. Geologic and mineral resources and surveys being carried on throughout the State of California cover investigations of mineral resources of nickel, copper, tungsten, borate, quicksilver and mineral fuels. The bulk of this work consists of mapping locations of these At Camp Pendleton minerals in specific areas. SAN DIEGO --Marine Pvt. Leland L. Suponch, son of Mr, and Mrs, Louis Suponch of 43-C Maryland Rd. and Pvt. Daniel W. Crabtree, son of Mrs, Albertha L. Crabtree of Route 2 both of Grass Valley completed recruit training, Dec, 19, at the Marine CorpsRecruit Depot, San Diego. Upon completion of the final phase of training, the new Marines reported to Camp Pendleton, for further infantry training. PHONE 273—8781 The mocking bird has a fine song of its own in addition toits remarkable power of mimicry, In addition to this, the Geological Survey is conducting studies of the volcanic geology in 25 different areasin the state. Many of these are in the mountain counties, A total of $550,000 will be spent this year on these two programs in the Second District, Both studies are being done in cooperation with the California Division of Mines, The third area of activity by the Geological Survey is water resource investigation. This work, which will cost $190, 000 this year in.the Second District involve investigations of water quality, ground water availability, salt water intrusion, etc. Again this is being done in cooperation with state agencies, LEGAL NOTICE CERTIFICATE OF AN INDIVIDUAL TRANSACTING BUSINESS UNDER FICTITIOUS NAME IT IS HEREBY CERTIFIED AS FOLLOWS: The undersigned is a person doing business in the State of California under the fictitious name “The B.M, W.
