A Foolish Friend
A man, mining in the neighborhood of Nevada, struck, some
time since, a quartz lead, which
in his estimation at least, is to
prove of great richness.
Being a generous cuss, he. offered to various friends and
acquaintences, a share in his
discovery by their merely paying

him a small sum each, sufficient to cover the expenses to
securing such claims.
The money was cheerfully
given him; but alas for the frailty
correct us if we're wrong.
Cayoteville will be remémbered.by our oldest inhabitants as
once having been a flourishing
place--putting on the airs of a
city--and not a few of its early
denizens predicted that it would
swallow up Nevada as it extended its Briarsan arms in every
direction.
It could once boast of its hotels, restaurants, saloons; gamof human nature. Instead of going
to the courthouse to have the
ground recorded he must needs
go to a saloon and have a 'social glass. :
A few libations soon made him
communicative, and giving a free
rein to his tongue, he expatiated
at length, to a circle of eager
listeners, upon the richness of
the claim--telling them the cirHis new friends, meanwhile
improved their time; in one hour
they were on the ground and in
another had the lead recorded.
The drunken cuss has not since
sobered up.

Nevada City in 1861, especially
if the victim happened to be a
secessionist, as is related. in
this account of a shooting on
Commercial Street, March 8,
1861. :
A man, supposed to be a secessionist, was shot in the neck,
the street, where it lay ‘till
the sun got around, when he was
again moved to a shady place.
The wound was serious, and
as at a late hour in the evening
he had not given any signs of life.

bling houses and all the et ceteras pertaining to a young and
growing California city.
Its citizens were restive at
being incorporated with Nevada--they were numerous enough
to govern themselves, and their
future prospects were more dazzling than a double-tinted rainbow. The bright yellow metal
was around them -and below
them, .
This proved the ruin of their
beloved city.
The gold was beneath their
stately dwellings and noisy
streets, and the ruthless power
of water under a 200-foot pressure, brought it out and snapped
the foundations of the city.
Gradually, but surely it has ’
melted away before the vandal
approaches of the miner and
of former splendor--but Cayoteville has disappeared forever,
and: not a solitary ruin marks
the spot where it once existed
in imperial magnificence.

Beer Sales
Set Record
SAN FRANCISCO--Beer sales
in California during 1967 exceeded the 10-million barrel
mark for the first time and
produced a record $165 million
of tax money for federal, state
and local treasuries.
Figures released here this
week by Geo. W. Ososke, executive secretary of the California Brewers Assn., indicate
that Californians purchased
10,140,000 barrels of beer in
1967 and in so doing picked up
a direct tax tab of more than
$138.6 million and an additional .
$26.5 million chit for indirect
taxes.

Noting that the California beer ,
tax total is rapidly approaching
$1/2 million daily, the association executive declared that the
taxes are all paid for by the
consumer in the form of higher
retail prices.
He likewise labeled the state
and federal excise taxes as "discriminatory" in that they place .
an inequitable share of the cost
of government on the consumers
