\ eoady By Fay M. Dunbar -273-2934 © I guess we must face the. inevitable. The holidays have finally had it and it's time to get back to the serious business of living again. At our house we always leave the manger scene on the mantle, and: if it isn't too dry we leave the Christmas tree up until the end of the Advent season, It seems to help somehow. to extend this beautiful time of year. Since early in December, the LittleWedding Chapel, which looks like a scene from Santa's workshop all the year, has turned our little town into a true bit of the "stuff Christmas is. made of". But now its lights are out, its sparkle is gone and it too is back to the serious business of living or should I_ say the serious business of loving. I find it all very sad. My New Year's resolutions always include three things, take care of your health, be happy and be a lady. The health bit means an extra trip to the dentist, the doctor and the opthamologist for me, This starts my new year off with a bang. Now that it's almost over, I must say I'm happy about the whole thing. The being a lady. bit is harder, as my mother interpreted it, and tried to teach me, being a lady is a 24-hour a day chore-a real "way of life''. My mother didn't think using the correct fork was too important, but she sure believed in "doing unto others" and all those good old fashioned: things like the Ten Commandments and honesty and kindness to your fellow man, Things that are really.-hard .to. live: up: too, ‘They do bring lots of pleasure. though, even when done rather badly as my resolutions ‘usually are, My mother was quite a "gal" with a heart as big as the whole world. seo F The Rough and Ready Dinner House, which was closed over the holidays, has reopened under new management, Fern and Bob Miller are planning some delectable innovations, Mrs, Miller is an experienced cook and takes great pride in serving fresh homemade bread daily. There will be a different "Specialty of the House" each day. The Fite Dept. Auxiliary Executive Board, both 1967 and 1968 members, will meet there tonight, Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m. or. earlier if you wish dinner, ' The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors plan to‘meet there Thursday the 11th and some of us mean to take advantage ofthe Thursday specialty Cornish pasties, Dont't forget the Grange Public Party at 1:30 p.m. Jan, 14, The ladies of the Grange serve refreshments about 3 p.m. and the party. lagts until 4:30 p.m. The Womens Activities Committee of the Rough and Ready Grange will meet at the home of Mrs, Mary Moneta at 12 noon on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Bring a sandwich for the "Fun Hour", Meeting starts at I p.m. Rough and Ready Square dancers will hold their regular meeting at the hall on Jan, 14. Pot luck dinner is at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is followed by the meeting and after that a short workshop. Bob Jackson is the club caller and helps with the workshop. id Rough and Ready 4-H Club will hold its regular meeting at the Grange hall on Jan. 12, at 4 p.m. (or when the school bus arrives). Demonstrations will. be the order of business. County ‘Demonstration Day is scheduled for Feb. 17. The club plans to hold club demonstrations ' at the Ready Springs School about one week earlier. . eK ’ Mr, .and Mrs. Everette Burk‘hard. and family have just returned from a family get-together in Washington. Some of the family live in Seattle. and some in nearby Hoquiam and Mr. Burkhard's sister and her family came from Tennessee. Twenty-four gathered on Christmas Day for dinner. It was the first time they had all been together since 1959 and it seems they really had a "ball". They experienced none of the flood problems we read about here. Their trip was uneventful until they reached Redding, California on their way home, Here a broken axle delayed them about three days. "Even this could have been worse," says Faye, No one was hurt and it waited until they were on nice wide highways. Dr. and Mrs. Clarence A, Splithoff of the.Bay area spent some of their holidays with the Bert Spaites' of Rough and Ready. Dr. Splithoff is an orthopedic surgeon with: the childrens hospital in the Bay area. One of our Rough and Ready youngsters, Miss Rhonda Prochaska, was fortunate ‘in having Dr. Splithoff care for her crushed foot after a recent accident with her horse. The Spaites' also had as holiday guests, daughter Mrs.0. E. Boeling of Oakland and her family and Dr. and Mrs, Gale Spaite also of Oakland. Dr. Gale is almost as enthusiastic about Rough and Ready as his brother Bert and helps whenever he is‘here. Mrs, Pat Boeling just about has her hands full with three youngsters and a husband inthe armed services but she and Mrs. Spaite
are quite interested inthe Sierra Nevada Hospital Auxiliary. The Bryan Christensens' spent some of their holiday with daughter, Mrs. Velda Dayton and her family in La Habra, California and stopped in Bakersfield for a visit with son Lewis Christensen on their way home. Excitement for them wasn't over however. Several days later a fox (or something besides a racoon) got into their chicken coop and stole away with Mr. Christensens' beautiful prized 1 rooster. Our new fire protection district had its first workout last week, There were all of the elements of a real first class fire, old frame house-the old Grandie . home-tinder dry grass, a barrel of diesel fuel close by and a freezing cold dry wind. Fortunately, while the fire was an accident, the owners, Mr. and Mrs, John W, Schuster and Mr. and Mrs. Anderson of Fremont Calif, who spend their weekends here when they can, had planned to have the place torn down and there were no furnishings inside, Mr. Schuster who had been burning brush had gone to the trailer to clean up when Mr, and Mrs. Steve Wood, going down Rough and Ready Road, -spotted the fire on the roof of The Nevada County Nugget re . The firemen were sorry not to get to use any chemicals, but Mr. Schuster wanted it to burn ‘clean.: Lucky it wasn't an emergency, however, because the pump motor was frozen and valuable minutes were lost getting the pump started. Jack Bursill, Jay Cullum, Bryan Christensen, Clair Peters and John Schuster helped our two firemen on the truck, They wet the nearby barn and trailer and surrounding area down thoroughly before leaving just in case of another live spark somewhere. * “Fay M, Dunbar 273-2934 HOSPITAL SUED Mary Lund and her daughter, Sanda May Lund, 17, are seeking $250,000 damages from Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and Dr, Keith Seolas, The Superior Court action contends that the doctor and hospital were negligent in the care.and treatment of George Lund, the late husband and father.
