eee aaa % #00-00-0#2.09-at6 AT HOME IN THE COUNTRY tet etete © At Home In Another Country You Can Get By With Arm Wavin (This is the first in a series on sights, sounds and smells seen, heard and smelled during the recent flying Mexican tour of Nugget editor Don Hoagland). By Don Hoagland In Mexico one can find almost anything. One's background, tastes, desires, maritial status, education and the fatness of his wallet are the main guides, There will alwaysbe a few other guides lounging around to lend a hand if one is undecided. Being a real American American, that is one who has been practically nowhere, but thinks America is the greatest land on earth and that we have a great thing going here, I decided to try a little of everything. I had hoped to accomplish this without looking like a tourist while still doing most of the things tourists do. I soon abandoned this idea forI soon realized that like a good many of my compatriots I hada lot of money by Mexican standards, I had not taken. the trouble to learn the language and knew almost nothing about the culture, history Or strong revolutionary background of the country. I should, but I didn't, Fortunately, I did take the trouble to obtain a few key phrases from a kind young lady in Grass Valley which were to prove invaluable during my two week journey from city to coastal playland to jungle and back to the city. These consisted mainly of “good day, good afternoon, good evening, how are you, I am well, thank you, pardon me, it's a pleasure, whiskey on the rocks, and no, I don't care to go to jail right now, thank you. " I felt guilty about my shortcomings so on the plane while I sat in a sweaty jet which for some reason they refused to allow us to leave in San Diego, I thumbed through the handly little phrase and things to see and doin Mexico book: Western Airlines had supplied me in Sacramento, I quickly added to my vocabulary such important words as one, two, three and four, left, right and no parking at either curb, I also learned that one should not drink too much in Mexico City because of the altitude (a theory I later disproved), that Mexicans like to drink, but frown on drunks (a theory I later proved), that Mexicans are friendly (a theory which is true) and that Mekicans do not approve of women wéaring slacks downtown (a theory strictly CLUB CRAZY HORSE Commercial St. Nevada City rockhinésuie JUKE BOX DANCING * Open From 11 A, M, Daily Closed Sunday observed by Mexicans, but often sadly ignored by Americans), Thus armed, I sailied forth into. the chill early. morning Mexican air and into a large, rather depressing room occupied by the customs agents, I assumed that because all of these Americans were flying in, all of the customs men would speakEnglish, That was my first mistake. For some reason, there seemedtobe about 1,000 people on our airplane but only about six customs men and only two of them spoke any English. I did not happen to get one of the latter and I flunked my first Spanish test. But I did get soggy green stickers on all of my luggage while the man next to me had to show his passport and had allhis baggage opened and prodded. So I picked up my bags at the end of the conveyor belt, walked timidly past three armed guards still not certain that I was yet supposed to leave the room, and was met by my brother who was to be my guide for the next two weeks, If you don"t know the language, two things will be a big helpan Mexico, First, findsomeone who does, It will be an additional help if you know someone who knows someone else, Secondly, you can get along if you know a few words and can wave your arms, Fortunately, I had taken care of both of these requirements before I arrived, I come from a long line of arm r ¥ S .
1 KitchenAid wavers. The fact is thatthe industry in the valley around the whole family couldbe effectively city, The goverment, I was silenced by tying their hands told, is working on the problem, behind their backs. I quickly ‘learned the word for eggs. By waving my arms and making stirring motions I got scrambled eggs. By accompanying the maid tothe kitchen and pulling out the package of sliced ham, I got ham and scrambledeggs. I never got anything else, but the scrambled eggs were like nothing I had ever had before. I let it go at that. For a coffee drinker this is a new world. I learned the first moming that by sticking my head out of the bedroom door and shouting, I could have delivered to me a thick mug of terribly hot, very black and wonderfully smelling coffee. This is not expresso, this is just coffee. But it is not just coffee, It has such a strong coffee aroma and is so strong tasting that you have the feeling all the time you are draining the mug that the brew wants to jump out and start a fight. What a way to start the day! The days in Mexico City in December are ideal, The early mornings are cool and sometimes overcast, but by 10 or 11/a,.m. the mist fades and the sky over the entire Valley of Mexico is a clear blue. ‘Mexico City, and the entire Valley of Mexicoforthat matter, is experiencing a growing smog _~ problem because of the expanding city and the concentration of BOXES OF STACKED APPLIANCES almost hide Banner /Sierra Appliances and Custom Cabinets, on Brunswick Road at Colfax Highway, in preparation for their January White Sale promotion beginning today, Special Sale Rack cciiieebimeeiiionteie aicccaa ae ce 1/3 OFF On DRESSES and SUITS -dressy or casual from $1. to $5. Ab ie Site Seep CORNER OF PINE & BROAD ST., NEVADA CITY £ One solution advanced is for outlying statesto offer tax breaks in-an effort to draw the industry out of the Valley of Mexico, here has been some success, but no great exodus at this point. Another sight familiar to Californians is the freeway or express highway. One runs about three iblocks from my brother's home .and is the fastest route to the ‘business center of Mexico City. Iwas startled, although I should be accustomed to it by now, to see the freeway builders had cut off the end of an ancient church to make wavy for the four lane road, It appeared that some people were still trying to put what remained of the church back together again, I mentioned this to a young Mexican lady friend as we drove past this church one morning on the way into the city. g But Words Help “They don't care," she said shrugging, “if it’s not a national monument they knock it down. “ What they haven't yet knocked down in Mexico City is astounding. What they have built in recent years is beautiful and exciting and what they have uncovered, restored and are continuing to restore staggers the imagination, (Next week a look at some things to see and do in and around Mexico City). Built in 1859 .. lately restored and refitted in the manner of the Gold Rush times.. now offers splendiferous overnite accommodations.
