Mrs. McGee seeks comments on removal of NC meters Alice McGee, chairman of the Nevada City parking committee, is asking for comments from business people and customers on the value or lack of value of free parking in the . downtown area. . This issue will be reviewed by the council next Monday. The city council removed the meters three months ago at the request of the parking committee, on a trial basis, The committee told-the council the members felt that sales tax in the city would increase, enough to offset the lack of-revenue from the meters, Mrs. McGee's letter follows: "Next Monday, Jan. 12, our city council will meet and evaluate the parking situation as it stands after having the meters removed for the past three months, "The removal of the meters Food stamp purchases liberalized The U. S, Department of Agriculture has liberalized: the purchase requirements for the food stamp program, local Welfare Director Eugene Newman reports. : "The Nevada County Department of Public Social Services is moving as rapidly as possible to implement the new purchase requirements by making them available immediately for new applicants and converting ‘the existing caseloads by Feb, 1," he said. Newman added: "The previous purchase requirements had drawn increasing criticism as being too high to permit a rate of participation adequate to the nutritional needs of the poor," The new standards will permit eligible households to spend not more than 30 per cent of their income for food stamps and also will enable them to get more stamps for their money. It also sets up the same total amount of stamps for each household of the same size; in other words, all eligible four-person households will receive $106 worth of stamps, but their payments for them will vary according to income, A person living alone on old age security assistance willunder the new standard pay $18 for $28 worth of food stamps, They have been paying $20 for $26 in stamps. A two-person household of old age security recipients will pay $36 for $56 in stamps, inSafety Rules For CookOuts This young scout is practicing one of the important safety “musts” for a cook-out or barbecue. A four-member household on aid to families with dependent children, receiving $221 in aid per month, and whose rent for example has been $80, has been required to put up $64 to get $90 worth of food stamps. The new standard will require $54 for $106 in stamps. Most people who ‘receive public assistance are eligible to purchase food stamps. ‘Many who don't receive public assistance, but who have small incomes, may be eligible. New nonassistance applicants and those on assistance who have not previously purchased food stamps may obtain the first month's purchase at half price. ‘This isa real opportunity to Senator stretch your dollars with food stamps," Newman said. The Nevada County Department of Public Social Services has three methods of issuing food stamps: Purchase by mail, purchase by automatic deduction from the grant, and in person purchase over the counter at the Social Service Department on the second floor of the old courthouse. Persons interested in further information should contact the department either by mail or phone call to the Nevada County Department of Public Social Services, Courthouse, Nevada City. Phone Nevada City 265-2461; Ext, 242.reports By SENATOR STEPHEN TEALE The 1970 session of the legislature is now under way and we will be hearing a lot of talk
in the coming weeks about several old problems... Hopefully, we will get more than talk this year and for two reasons -it's an election year and the people of California want action. Everybody from the Legislature to the Executive Branch has already tagged the two major issues of the year as tax reform and the fight agaist environmental pollution, The tax reform issue has been with us for some time while we ve in the past couple of years d some tax relief measures, they have not been enough and represent only apiece-meal approach to a problem which requires overall reform of our taxing structure as a final solution, Iam hopeful this year that we can put together the pieces of a real restructuring of our taxing system’ so that we can raise revenues needed for state services, but raise them in a way Riba? that will permit everyone to carry the taxing load equally. Chances for all of this coming about this year are better than normal for the two reasons I have already mentioned --it's an election year and the people have already made it clear that if the Legislature will not enact tax reform, the people . will through initiative. The kind of scatter-gun approach to law included in in‘itiatives often creates more problems than it.solves. The varied problems of environmental pollution have also been with us for some time, but it was not until last year that the‘ public really began to voice its concern over the rapid deterioration of our natural resources and environment. The fight over filling of San Francisco Bay last year was one of the biggest battles of the Session, The new legislative session © will be a challenging one and I am looking forward to meeting the challenges facing this growing state. : was on a trial basis, hopefully to stimulate business in the downtown district. We feel that it has helped a great deal in keeping traffic moving, and to date have recieved scores of comments favoring the: continuance.of no meters in Nevada city. a "However, this means.a cut in city revenue. which we hoped would be offset by an increase in tax income, "As chairman of the. parking committee and a member of the chamber. of commerce, I am asking for comments from our business people and shoppers regarding the meter problem. Do your favor keeping meters out? Should they be returned to use? Or is it immaterial? We would very much like to have statements from the business community and public, "Please address all comments to me, in care of the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall. Globetrotters coming to Sac next Thursday Ten years ago Bob Brainerd along with his 12-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, did a fine family trampoline act. as part of the Harlem..Globetrotters' program at Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium.
