from Vietnam
Gordon K, Beatie, 25, has
returned home from Vietnam
where he has, completed a year
of active duty. Beatie served
as a personnel management officer at the Phu Bai Army Base
located near Hue.
During his year in Vietnam,
Beatie received two awards: one
for meritorious service and the
other the BronzeStar, presented
just days before his departure.
With the completion of his tour
in Vietnam, Beatie has been
discharged from the Army. He
spent his first year of service
on a helicopter base near Atlanta, Geor.
Awaiting Beatie's arrival
were numerous family members: His wife Millicéht of Deer
Park Drive, Nevada City; his
parents Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth
Beatie of Rough and Ready; his
brother Daniel also of Rough
and Ready; His sister Karen of —
Palos Verdes and her two children, Christine, 3, and Kenneth,
11 ‘months, whom Beatie had
never seen; his eneene
Cary Arbogast, 94, Oak
Nursing Home, his ‘parents-i
law Jack and Millicent Clark
of Grass Valley, and sister-inlaw, Susie Clark.
The two families celebrated ~
Christmas together following
Beatie's arrival, exchanging
gifts, enjoying a traditional
Christmas dinner, and viewing
the slides and movies Beatie
took during his tour. ‘

store here to
be honored
Grass Valley Hardware, the
oldest established hardware
store in California at the same
location, according to owner
Glenn Jones, will be honored
Jan, 17 by Native Daughters of
California.
Nancy T, Conens, grand president of NDGW, and other state
officials of the lodge, will be

dedication ceremony at the Mill
Street store, sponsored locally
by Manzanita and Quartz Parlors,
E. E. McLaughlin opened a
hardware store at 114 Mill St.,
in 1854, The business was in a
brick building, the only structure on Mill Street to survive
thedisastrous fire of 1855, It
served as. a storehouse for
burned out businessmen of the
town for a time.
Peter’ Johnson became the
owner in 1870 and in 1893 it
was. incorporated under the
name of Elam Biggs Hardware
Company, Samuel Thomas Jones
bought out Biggs in 1906, The
business was managed by Samuel for. a number of years,
this his son, Alvon and Alvon's
son; Glenn,

that a sanitary cut and fill operation for western Nevada

near McCourtney Road now used

Hal Cox, sanitarian, and Dr.
Peter. Keenan, health officer,
‘said:

In his letter; Vail said he

The supervisors felt theplans
to start a sanitary land fill
operation won't be ready to im‘plement by April 1, but Supervisor Ralph Buchanan commented that "if we have a plan, we
may get a reprieve onthat date."
Supervisor Robert Long said
some engineering is being done
on the possible sites now with
the “hope this problem can*be
solved by summer."
The board finally decided to
write BLM and explain what.is
being done, Also, Cox and Dr.
Keenan will be asked to meet
with the board soon to give a
progress report.
