Before we tell you of this picture let's tell who the
young ladies and gentlemen of 1888 were. Only the
girl's maiden names are here listed but if you have lived
in Nev. Co, very long you'll recognize the identifications as a WHO'S WHO of Nevada City”:

The most fascinating news story of the past week comes
from the 110 year old Mountain Messenget of Downieville with an item as reported by its star reporter Eugene
Stowe. .
It had to do with the retirement of Margaret Lambert
as Sierra County treasurer after 35 years of public service. Mrs. Lambert, always with a reputation to speak
her mind, has frequently down the years shown her disdain for the Board of Supervisors. In this clip from the
Mt, Messenger her characteris even more revealing. DA
Gordon Smith was MC:
episode beginning. her distinguished
career, telling of an early board
policy of requiring all new county
officers to crawl through a small
doorway to the board chambers on
hands and knees, thus showing
proper respect to. the members.
Mrs. Lambert was equal to the occasion,, however, on her initial appearance, as she backed through
and gave the board a rather unusual first view of their new treasurer, :

Visualize the Plaza as it now is on Jan. 16, ‘63. In
1875 a building called Temperance Hall stood where the’
Old Brewery now: stands. Temperance Hall burned to the
ground in 1879. George Gehrig built the present old
brewery and made beer there. Over the present bar he
erected a dance hall which he leased to Professor John
Mitchell who conducted a school of proper ballroom
dancing and good social manners for the then ‘teen agers
pictured above. This dance hall was destroyed by fire on
Oct. 1, 1889. A fire started inthe Plaza Grocery,
jumped in all directions, partially burned the Deer Creek
Bridge and the surrounding bldgs except the present Old
Ice House. What was life like in Nevada City 75 yrs ago
when this picture was taken in front of the Dunnicliff
home at,the Plaza? We asked Frank Gunther, now 90
yrs old: In spite of a mining and frontier background, NC
than as now had a deep cultural responsibility. Only
churches and saloons were open on Sundays, City lit by
gas lamps. Food for two: $13 per month. T -bone steaks,
15¢ each. Flour, 85¢ for 50 lbs. Leg of lamb, 75¢.
Children no problems then, They had no spending
money and parents gave them good home training,
Frank's first job with ML&D Marsh got paid $30 per
month with room and board, There were*very few trees
in NC way back then. Take another look at Prof Mitchell
in the picture above. On Sat. PM's he taught the kids
the social. graces and in the evening headed an 8 piece
orchestra at Armory Hall(now Purity). The good old days
in Nevada City? They are now as always---the years
when YOU and YOU and YOU grew up here,

This week it's Happy Birthday'to an old friend and
(almost) constant companion---our 12 year old dog of
mixed parentage, Paddy. Paddy and his twin white
brother were left on the door step of Jean Haley's Nevada ©
St. home in 1951. The brother did not long survive Nev~
ada St. traffic but down the years Paddy has done very
well with the 7000 cars in 24 hours on the NC-GV highway.
I can't imagine a home without a dog, But none of
those fancy breeds like poodles and cockers that makes
the vets rich with their demands and their owner's foolishnesses. A dog can become a hypochondriac faster than
a human. Paddy sleeps outside and can forage for himself if need be. Twice he has been dyed green for St.
Patrick 's Day festivities. Spent six years in but never
graduated from kindergarten, On stormy days has hitched
free rides on the NC-GV bus. Was named after the great
musician Paderewski because when ‘he was a puppy--he was the pianist.
Most of the time a good watch dog. A dog is supposed
tobe by years six times a human span. So Paddy by such
figuring is 72 yrs old, But still full of the old chase.
Where was he the night our car was’stolen? At home
guarding the property? No. On Main St, near the postoffice. Pursuing with amour, amour. With a Dachshund
yet, So tonite on his 12th (or is it his 72nd) Paddy will
be served his favorite cooked hot lamb's liver:

Toastmasters International.
Nevada Union speech and

Frank Milhous now has a
caged hawk. He's a full
grown bird and quite large
‘and Ihave my doubts about
him turning into a very
loving pet. Hawk owning
may turn into the latest
rage. Shawn Allison's Sparrow hawk is growing up
enough to eat birds now but
he gets so piggish about it
that he nearly choked to
death a few days ago and had
to be given artificial respiration, if you can imagine
that.
