. Nikolai Lenine, Russia’s bolshevik leader of world renown,
died suddenly at his villa in the village‘of Gorki, about 20 miles
Melvin H. Bemis, captor of General Edward Johnston of the
Confederate Army at the battle of Fredericksburg, died in
‘Sacramento at the age of 82. Bemis commanded the noted 145th
Pennsylvania Volunteers during the entire Civil War.
‘The State Mining Bureau estimated the total mineral
“production for California in 1923 to have been $270,472,000. Gold
production was estimated at $13,350,000; silver, $2,771,000 and
copper, $3,942,000, out of the more than 50 mineral substances
tallied in the State.
A. P. Giannini, for 20 years president of the Bank of Italy (now
Bank of America), announced his plans to retire in October of 1924,
“to make room at the top for others.’
‘Edward C. Uren had returned from a business trip to Butte,
Montana, and was telling friends about the rigors of 30-degree
below zero weather which he had encountered in and around Butte.
What was declared to be the most complete equipment for the
manufacture of illicit liquor ever confiscated in Sierra County, was
taken from an old and apparently deserted cabin near Pike City.
The haul included a 30-gallon still, 3,000 pounds of sugar, a vat of
mash, fruits in quantity, corn and rye in substantial amounts.
After 40 years of constant use, the big scales at the entrance to
Empire Market on Main Street, Grass Valley, were removed to a
rear location to make room for modernization of the building. The
scales had been installed by one Theodore Wilhelm, who opened the
market about 1884. During those four decades, an average of 12
head of beef cattle were weighed on the scales every week. A total
of better than 24,900 head in that period of time. An old timer told a
local reporter that ‘‘there’s not a man alive in Grass Valley now
(1924) who has money enough to buy that much beef.”
Thomas W. Noell, native and long-time resident of Grass
Valley, died of tuberculosis at his home in Oakland. He was about
50 years of age at time of death. Noell operated grocery store in
Hill’s Flat before removing to Oroville in about 1912. Several years
later, he moved to Oakland to a permanent residence and opened
another grocery; which was being operated by his mother at thetime of his death.
Movie of the week in Nevada City was ‘“The Spider and The
Rose’’ a story of. Mission life in California during the period of
Mexican rule under Emperor Maximillan I. Cast included such
favorites as Alice Lake, Noah Beery and Louise Fazenda. The
double bill featured Harold Lloyd in a hilarious comedy, ‘‘AmongThose Present.”’ .

fountains do not present a
problem for most of us. They are
built to accommodate the height
and weight of the average
human being, and assume that
each individual has the normal
physical ability to deal with
them.
But what if you’re
handicapped? What if your view
of the world is from a
wheelchair that cannot be safely
operated up or down stairs, over
curbs, or cannot fit through
narrow doorways, or is not high
enough for eaching pay phones
and drinking _ fountains? And
what about public toilet
facilities that do not admit
wheelchairs or have no
accommodations. for the
handicapped?
. A meeting is scheduled in
Washington D.C. next week to

mental hygiene
Mark James Ranker, 21, of
Grass Valley has been sent: to
the State Department of Mental
Hygiene.
Ranker appeared in superior
court Friday for a hearing and
was found to be “a mentally
disordered sex offender.” Judge
Harold F. Wolters ordered
Ranker sent to the state hospital
at Atascadero.
Ranker and a 14-year-old boy
were arrested by Grass Valley
police in mid-October charged
with burglarizing a Grass Valley
home.

Brad Ellsworth county
bar association leader
Bradford E. Ellsworth was
elected as the 1974 president of
the Nevada County Bar
Association.
Ellsworth and other new officers were elected at a recent
business session held at the
National Hotel.’ District
Attorney Ronald MacMillen is
the outgoing president.
Others elected are Edmund J.
Dunning, vice president and
Richard Ellers, secretarytreasurer .
Ellsworth is a native of
Nevada county and practices
aw with the firm of Hunt and
lisworth. Dunning came to this
area from San Francisco in 1968
where he served as assistant
district attorney andfor17 years
as counsel for the Central Valley
Bank. Ellers practices in
Nevada City where his wife,
‘Marcie, has many family ties.
The primary purpose of the
bar association is to provide a
forum whereby attorneys
practicing in Nevada county
may exchange ideas and information so that they might
better serve and provide for the
legal needs of the residents of
the county.
The major event of the year
for the Nevada County Bar
Association is the Law Day
Program. Richard J. Schneider
is chairman of the program
which is scheduled for the first
week in May. This year the
Nevada County Bar Association
plans an evening dinner
program, featuring a speaker
from the State Supreme Court.
Future details will be made
available to all individuals and
agencies concerned with law or
law enforcement in the near
future.
_ The Legal Aid Screening
Committee. will be headed by
Charles White of Nevada City
and Patricia E. Kepler of Grass
Valley. This committee is
charged with the responsibility
of interviewing those deserving
legal aid and referring those
qualifying to members of the
bar for assistance.
