ASA TAILS HITE ES Page 12..Wednesday, January 17, 1962..NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET Lumber Forum Discusses Marketing Burned Timber "When the box car door was opened all hell broke loose, " said the speaker. “Thousands of these horntailed wasps flew out all over the place. It wouldn't have been so bad except it seems that for a couple of . weeks before a big advertising campaign was put on byapest exterminating company, " He paused, “It seems everyonein town was a bit jumpy about termites because of this advertising. Imagine what they thought at the railroad yards when this car of lumber arrived from California full of bugs! " This incident occured in Chicago last year, according to the speaker, Bob Gates, manager of Yuba River Lumber Co, Gates was a member of a panel of three lumber men who spoke before the quarterly meeting. of the Sacramento-T ahoe Forest Forum at the Victorian Dining Room in Nevada CityJan. 5, The Forum was attended by almost 70 people who had been concerned with the harvest and marketing of lumber from areas devastated by recent forest fires, The three panel members spoke of their experiences with such lumber and all agreed the biggest problem was with insect infestation. By Bob Wyckoff "We lost almost 25 per cent of our molding stock to the bugs, " said George Duff, manager of the Cal-Ida operation in Auburn, "We finally put all the lumber fromthe burnin the kiln for 24 hours at 180. We found this treatment killed the bugs. " Phil English of Placerville Forest Products rounded out the panel, His advice was in the form ofa preventative measure, "Log as soon after the burn asis possible. Move the logs, and move them fast." The English theory of speed was born out by Forest Service Entomologist Boyd Wickman, "Smoke is an attractant to insects. Two of the recent large burns ( in this area) occurred in August when the bugs were in full flight. It would seem they were attracted to the area by the smoke, The Camptonville burn took place in November when the bugs were partially dormant so the infestation didn't take place ‘tilthe following year when the insects normally were in flight." Dipping the lumber from the burned areas and fumigation were discussed as methods of control. While Bob Gates said his company had fairly good results with a certain chemical solution, Wickman said there is at PIONEER BARBER S HOP present no evidence that fumigation is effective. All who spoke agreed with Duff that the only sure way to kill -the bugs was heating in a kiln, Leo Speckert of AO, Speckert Lumber Co, in Marysville said his firm sprinkles the logs in the deck, He states that no insect damage has been found to this time. What of future timber sales involving fire damaged trees? Gates summed upthe sentiment of many, “If I had to buy burned timber again, I wouldn't, If you don't have dry kilns, leave the stuff alone!” AT THE SPEAKERS TABLE----Taking part in the discussion at the recent Sacramento --Tahoe Forest Forum.are: (L-R) Panel Moderator Bill Lambert, US Forest Service; KEN ADAMS YOUR MONY MAN MORTGAGE PROTECTION HEALTH INSURANCE RETIREMENT FUNDING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS PERSONAL INSURANCE Mutual Of New York GRASS VALLEY 273-2494 PLANING $250 Million Bond Issue Asked By CTA Secretary BURLINGA ME=-Gov.
