It was in 1848 that a New Jersey carpenter named James Marshall began constructing a sawmill for Capt. John Sutter in the Valley of the Coloma Indians, He saw something glittering in the sand and picked up the first golden flake, Within a year the California Gold Rush was on, construction of Sutter's Mill. Each timber was hand cut and hand hewn and put together with wooden pegs, Eventually a giant water wheel waspainstakingly constructed under the structrure. It took 36 months of work to complete the building, Now it is finished. Sutter's Mill stands once again in Coloma near the Gold Discovery Site, Sunday, January 21, is the Discovery Day.
