Union Official Talks
With NID About Pay
Nevada Irrigation District's
long-awaited. water rate study
' is expected to be available Feb,
2, and several issues: may depend on the findings of the report from James M. Montgomery, consulting engineer.
The NID board of directors
referred to .the study Friday
when M.A, Walters, assistant
manager of Local Union 1245,
International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO,
urged the board to find ways
and means of granting a five
per cent wage hike, to reconsider its withdrawal of employes' purchase benefits, and
to set up a joint management
and union group to draft and
adopt a safety manual and develop a safety program.
Board Chairman Alex Ferreira told Walters, who was accompanied by four NID maintenance and operations workers,
that the board had explained the
situation. about raises to the
employes, and why the board
handn't granted them.
Ferreira said it "would be
foolish to raise wages now"
without first analyzing the water rate study.
And Walters replied that "as
consumers, we don't want to
see a rate increase, but ifthat's
the way to get salary increases,
that's the move to make,"
He said the union had hoped
the board would raise salaries
sooner but if a delay is-necessary, the union hopes the in.
creases will go back to the first
of the year.
When. Director Vernon Vineyard pointed out that NID has
many thousands of dollars to
make up to balance the budget,
Walters said, 'A demoralized,
disenfranchised work force is
not going to help."
Walters mentioned an eightpoint program submitted to the
board of directors some months
ago, one that wasn't acted on.
The three points be raised Friday were part of the first proposal which he said was "'reasonable and justified."
Walters said the U.S, Department of Labor's recent report
indicated a salary adjustment
of about five per cent in the
last half of 1967, not taking in
fringe benefits. He said that
state, county and Grass Valley
city employes. have been granted salary increases,
"Failure to meet salary raises
means the employes are subsidizing the district," Walters
claimed.
Chief Engineer Keith Sauers
appeared before the board in
behalf of the office employes,
requesting that salary increases apply to them as well astothe
maintenance and operations employes,
