HISTORIC DOWNIEVILLE LANDMARKS--Downieville, Calif.,
founded in 1849, was the sixth largest city in California in
1852 and by far the richest, The second largest nugget ever
found unearthed came from near Downieville. Diggins that paid
$2,000 per day per man. were common and $5,000 a day per
man -was not unusual, Shown above are some of the historic
assets in the community, 1-The "Blue Banks," incredibly
rich, 2-Site of the Old Opera House, Booth and Barrett played
here, 3-First store building that has withstood three fires
that destroyed the town, 4-The Old Dance Hall, 5-The Famous
"Tin Cup" diggins, where each owner's daily share of gold
was measured out in a tin cup, 6-Site of the bridge where the
only woman ever hanged in “California was executed, 7-The
"Forks," where Downieville got its first name, First gold
The Nevada County Nugger Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1968 7
discovery was made here, 8-Home of Mountain Messenger,
one of California's oldest newspapers, founded in,1853. Formerly the home of Judge Cowdery, famous jurist. 9-The
oldest Court House in California, built in 1853, 10-Road to
Sierra City along the Yuba River. 11-First road into Downieville, built in 1850, joined the Old Emigrant Road from Virginia City to Sacramento. 12-Remains of the old hydraulic

The many friends of the Walter Singers will be saddened to
hear that Walter died the 2nd
of January — The Singers had
in the past lived at Penn. Valley
Mobile Ranch, Mt, Air Park,
and Grass Valley Village before
moving to the Coast.

County Assessor, in his second
year as a county official, has
made his annual announcement
of intended assessed ratio to full
cash value of properties in Placer County. In announcing a 25
percent ratio he calls attention
to new legislation amending the
“Revenue and Taxation Code that
makes it mandatory for assessors to announce’a ratio. no
farther away from 25 percent of
full cash value than the ratio
employed by the county for the
preceding fiscal year.
He said the law also requires
that beginning with the lien date
for the 1971-72 fiscal year,
every assessor in the state.will .
be required to assess all property subject to general property
taxation at 25 percent of its full
cash value,
He also pointed out that public
utilities, of which we have several in Placer County, are not
assessed by the Placer County
