Problems At PTA
An overflow crowd of 75 members ofthe Nevada Union
High School PTA attended a meeting Monday night at
the Nevada City Junior High to discuss law enfotcement
and the juvenile.
Mrs. Goldie Frisch, PTA president, conducted the
meeting which featured a talk by Harold A. Berliner,
district attorney on cooperation between parents and law
enforcement agencies.
Sheriff Wayne Brown and other civic leaders participated
in the ensuing discussion,
Berliner stated that teen-ager's problems with the law
in Nevada County were the exception, not the rule, and
no cause for sudden alarm. However, he added, there
wasreason for concern, and long range planning for cooperative effort to keép local difficulties to a minimum.
Questions and opinions from the audience were asked
by Mr. Berlinef on a number of related subjects, and
. discussion on these lasted for more than an hour.
Principal speaker and mod.
First topic discussed was the curfew, and Berliner told
of the difficulty of enforcement, and the lack of uniformity in administering it. Although the County Ordidinance provides all young people under age 18 must be

In another court action,
Judge Stoll sentenced 16year-old Dwayne Wright to
the California Youth Authority for his part in the atreturning from legitimate entertainment.
Sheriff Wayne Brown commented that this was a difalthough it had its uses; that
he had been against the notion when it went into effect
about ten years ago, but that he now thought it helpful.
Members of the PTA expressed a wide range of opinions,
from belief that it should be abandoned to the feeling
that it should be strictly and impartially enforced.

parents should be informed by the police of every infraction committed by their, offenses.
Berliner next asked the
views of the parents on drinking, and for suggestions to
curbit. There were many
ideas as to the chief sources
of youngsters’ supply of al-coholic beverages but few
ideas on how it could be
stopped, other than by present methods.
All agreed stern punishment should be given bar
owners who served minors
and adults buying liquor for
minors. It was generally felt
that parents should take more
responsibility in this area.
Punishments and probation
were also,discussed, All
parents thought that punishment would go with probation, but carefully given

should not deprive students
of athletic privileges and
other school offices and some
thought it should.
When asked why some
students were deprived of
such privileges, Berliner replied that he believed the
school did this to show that
offenders would not be left
in positions of leadership and
respect of the other students;
and also that the offenders
were asmall minority in the
school, and that the nonoffenders should be able to
see that being good citizens
brought rewards which were
forfeited by those who broke
the law.
General discussion followed,
and Sheriff Wayne Brown siiggested that another important
problem was young. people
and their automobiles.
Much comment followed
onthis, and Brown suggested
that a law restricting licenses
to 18 year olds should be
considered,
