TEENAGE PROBLEMS CONCERN GROWS . 75 Discuss Juvenile Problems At PTA An overflow crowd of 75 members ofthe Nevada Union High School PTA attended a meeting Monday night at the Nevada City Junior High to discuss law enfotcement and the juvenile. Mrs. Goldie Frisch, PTA president, conducted the meeting which featured a talk by Harold A. Berliner, district attorney on cooperation between parents and law enforcement agencies. Sheriff Wayne Brown and other civic leaders participated in the ensuing discussion, Berliner stated that teen-ager's problems with the law in Nevada County were the exception, not the rule, and no cause for sudden alarm. However, he added, there wasreason for concern, and long range planning for cooperative effort to keép local difficulties to a minimum. Questions and opinions from the audience were asked by Mr. Berlinef on a number of related subjects, and . discussion on these lasted for more than an hour. Principal speaker and mod. First topic discussed was the curfew, and Berliner told of the difficulty of enforcement, and the lack of uniformity in administering it. The boys will be required to go directly home after school, pay full retail price to the stores fromwhich merchandise was stolen for items they bought ata "bargain" fromthe burglars, and comply with’all school rules. The Nevada Union High School district imposed sanctionsnearly astough as those given by the court. None of the offenders will be allowed to participate in any student: body activities, including athletics and social activities. In another court action, Judge Stoll sentenced 16year-old Dwayne Wright to the California Youth Authority for his part in the atreturning from legitimate entertainment. Sheriff Wayne Brown commented that this was a difalthough it had its uses; that he had been against the notion when it went into effect about ten years ago, but that he now thought it helpful. Members of the PTA expressed a wide range of opinions, from belief that it should be abandoned to the feeling that it should be strictly and impartially enforced. of hands about half of those present indicated they favored full enforcement at the given to the proposition that parents should be informed by the police of every infraction committed by their, offenses. Berliner next asked the views of the parents on drinking, and for suggestions to curbit. There were many ideas as to the chief sources of youngsters’ supply of al-coholic beverages but few ideas on how it could be stopped, other than by present methods. All agreed stern punishment should be given bar owners who served minors and adults buying liquor for minors. It was generally felt that parents should take more responsibility in this area. Punishments and probation were also,discussed, All parents thought that punishment would go with probation, but carefully given in each particular case. Some though it should be "sharp and short", Some thought it tempted burglary of Sierra Truck and Motor office in; Grass Valley. should not deprive students of athletic privileges and other school offices and some thought it should. When asked why some students were deprived of such privileges, Berliner replied that he believed the school did this to show that offenders would not be left in positions of leadership and respect of the other students; and also that the offenders were asmall minority in the school, and that the nonoffenders should be able to see that being good citizens brought rewards which were forfeited by those who broke the law. General discussion followed, and Sheriff Wayne Brown siiggested that another important problem was young. people and their automobiles.
