January 18, 1967. wo"g Candidates for Grass Valley-Nevada City Traffic , Signal now Flasher Medicare Urged to File Early Don't delay filing for medicare if you are within three months of your 65th birthday, ” King C. Torgesen, social security district manager in Sacramento, pointed out. “This advice applies to all those who are approaching 65 even though they may plan to continue working full time, “ Torgesen said, . ‘The enrollment period for signing up for the doctor bill insurance part of medicare is a T-month period beginning three months before the month you reach 65.and continuing for three months after you’ are 65. Torgesen stressed, however, that medical insurance _ coverage can begin with the month of y our 65th birthday _ only if you file your application in one of the three months before. you reach 65.,, Animportant point that Tor. gesen emphasized is that you don"t have to retire to enroll for medicare, In fact, when you do file you may be surprised to learn that, because of new and more liberal provisions that started in 1966, your present earnings may permit you to receive partial social security cash benefits, The conciuding advice by Torgesen is to visit your Sac* ramento social security office at 1818 § Street three months before you celebrate your 65th birthday. By filing promptly for medicare and for any
monthly cash benefits, you will be protecting yourself, The Sacramento social security office is open until 7:30 P, ype, sis Thursday ev to ac¢ommiodate anyone who cannot call during regular office hours, Income Tax Break for — Servicemen Joseph M.: Cullen, District Director of Internal Revenue for Northern California, had important news for servicemen today. The Director stated that the income tax exclusion for combat pay received by commissioned officers serving with the armed forces in Viet Nam has been raised from $200 to $500 per month, A recent amendment to the Internal Revenue Code made the larger exclusion from gross income retroactive to January 1, 1966. Enlisted men were already exempt on all of their combat pay for service in Viet Nam and re-~ lated hospitalization. The increase in the exclusion, from $200 to $500 per month, also applies to officers hospitalized as a result of service in Viet Nam. President Johnson on April 24, 1965, signed an Executive Orderdesignating Viet Nam and the adjacent waters as a combat zone, thereby giving Federal income tax relief for armed forces personnel serving in Viet Nam onor after January 1, 1964, Mr. Cullen stated that Servicemen who are due refunds on this year’s income tax returns should "COMBAT ZONE" at the top of their form. The IRS expedites processing of refund. returns so marked, Servicemen alsoserving in Viet Nam have an automatic extension of time for filing. Returns are not due until 180 days after combat zone veterans leave Viet Nam -or if they are hospitalized outside of the United States as a result of Viet Nam service -until 180 days after they are released from the hospital. There ’ isnointerest or penalties on such delayed returns. _ The newly installed traffic’. signal on Highway 20 northeast. of Grass Valley at the Brunswick Road intersection is now in flashing operation and will continue without change until the Grass Valley-Nevada City freeway is opened to traffic later this year, ‘ according tostate highway officials at the Marysville district office. . The signal operated for a short John A, Gallegos, New Executive Manager of the Nevada County iod on a tixed-time sequence. This allowed local drivers to become accustomed to it and perpate Division of Highways ‘@ngineers to test the equipment. Now, because of relatively light traffic on Brunswick Road, ‘and for the convenience of through traffic, Route 20 motorists ‘will have the right-of-way controlled only by flashing yellow ‘lights. Chamber of Commerce has ‘arrived in Nevada City and spent his first week visiting local firms and meeting the people with whom he will be working, In the above picture he is conferring with Vi Howard, Nevada City Chamber Secretary-Manager, who accompanied him on his visit to the Nugget office, Gallegos began his regular duties in his new offices in the Conference room of the Court House Monday January 9th, One of his first acts will be to prepare a program of aims for County Chamber for submission to the Board of Directors, headed by Coy Miller of Mother Lode Bank in Grass Valley.
