has slated a board of directors election to take place sometime within the next two weeks. Seven ofthe 11 board posts are to be filled, with four holdover members remaining. President McGee said that this will probably be the last attempt to put the cha mber in working order. If increased interest and cooperation is not shown on the part of the new directors and member merchants, plansto permanently disband will be carried out. Talk of discontinuing the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce began last August when board member Tom Yost facetiously suggested that they disband because of apathy on the part of the directorsand people. However, response from other directors indicated a serious interest in the suggestion. ' As a result, President McGee called a special meeting to discuss the idea, but lack of interest was further pointed up when only five of the 11 directors appeared ---six are needed to make a quorum. , By unanimous action, the five present ordered a halt toall chamber expenditures and went on record not to be field responsible for any further debts incurred by the Chamber, its officials or members. ; Following this.action, various Nevada City groups strenously -. opposed the shut-down and offered (Continued on Page 2) Anti-Rumford Petition ., ---a denial of the principle of good will/toward men by special privilege groups. “ He said the petition which is being circulated in the county to repeal the Rumford Act “is in direct opposition to the message . of Christmas. " Noble told the Nugget he hoped citizens would not sign the peti— tion--and if they have signed it, that they will withdraw their names, He said he has spoken with several other ministers in this area who substantially agree with his view point. The petition is available for signature at several local real estate offices. The full statement issued by Noble follows: "During this season when we have been singing praises to God and: echoing the angels’. message of good will to all men, we Christians inNevada County are faced with a situation which is indirect opposition to the message of Christmas. This is the petition which is being circulated to repeal the Rumford Act. “In 1963 our state legislature passed a bill which has been hailed all over the nation as the most sensjble piece of social legislation to be enacted in any (Continued on Page 2).
