Taxable sales in the county amounted to $9,519,000. The . three percent tax slice came to $285, 570. The substantial growth in revenue does not represent an unexpected windfall for the state: because virtually the entire increase had been anticipated in the revised revenue estimate for the current fiscal year which was presented by the Department of Finance to the Legislature last May. Amongretailers the largest amount of sales tax was paid by new car dealers who accounted for $24 million, or $2 million moré.than in the third quarter of 1962. Department and dry goods stores produced over $18 million, an amount $1.8 million greater thanthat for a year earlier. Restaurants yielded $16 1/2 million. Statewide, sales of retail stores comprising two-thirds of all taxable transactions ran almost ten percent ahead of those in the third quarter of 1962. An increase of nearly 40 percent was achieved by farmimplement dealers. Next to this was a gain of one-third posted . by trailer, boat, cycle, and plane dealers. Lumber and building materials stores recorded a larger relative increase than any other principal business class as their sales climbed 18 1/2 percent. This gain was almost matched by automotive supplies and parts stores. Grocery stores selling all types of liquors posted an increase of 14 percent in sales of taxable merchandise. Taxable sales of household and home furnishings stores were up 13 percent. Other business classes reporting receipts ten. percent or more above those of a year ago included department and dry goods stores, household appliance dealers, tobacco stores, and “other specialty stores”.
