Powell as he climbed down from the pilot seat of the SR-71 at Beale AFB, yesterday, because he did so as the only pilot ever to achieve 1,000 hours of flight in the SR-71. .This distinction also makes him the only nonastronaut to have flown more than onemillion miles with an average velocity of over 1,000 miles per hour.Lt. Col. Powell assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnassance Wing took off on his record breaking flight from Beae at 4:15 p.m. yesterday and returned at 6:45 p.m. flying over thousands of miles of territory. On hand to greet the colnel were a number of Beale officials, including Colonel Patrick J. Halloran, commander of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing.
