SR-71 pilot hits 1,000 mark ~Beale AFB, -There were hand shakes and congratulations waiting Lt. Col. Robert M. Powell as he climbed down from the pilot seat of the SR-71 at Beale AFB, yesterday, because he did so as the only pilot ever to achieve 1,000 hours of flight in the SR-71. .This distinction also makes him the only nonastronaut to have flown more than onemillion miles with an average velocity of over 1,000 miles per hour.Lt. Col. Powell assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnassance Wing took off on his record breaking flight from Beae at 4:15 p.m. yesterday and returned at 6:45 p.m. flying over thousands of miles of territory. On hand to greet the colnel were a number of Beale officials, including Colonel Patrick J. Halloran, commander of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. The Tampa Florida native enlisted in the Air Force in 1948, In 1957, Colonel Powell was one of the few pilots chosen to fly Lockheed’s secret new high
altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the U-2. = In 1966, Colnel Powell w among five other U-2 pilots who joined the SR-71 program as the after 9th SRW became operational at Beale. His aerial awards include two Distinguished Flying Croses, 17 Air Medals and numerous other citations. Colonel Powell has more SR-71 flying time, more SR-71 reconnaissance missions, and more flying time at over 3 times the speed of sound than any other nonastronaut in the world. ; Colonel Powell, his wife Marlene and their three children live in Yuba City. The dolls. were displayed . during the party. tax returns early “Most Californians will get experienced some delay.” State income tax refunds in 1974, and those who file their tax returns early will get the fastest refund,” Houston I. Flournoy, State Controller and Chairman of the Franchise Tax Board, said today. “Last year,” said riournoy, “we processed more than four million refund warrants for a total of $367 million. The refunds averaged $78 each. We anticipate that this pattern will repeat itself.” .
