built the two-speed
hydraulic wood splitter as
a Nevada Union High
School shop project.
NU senior wins
A Nevada Union High School
‘senior, Ernést Vogt, has been
named a winner of one of the
annual James F, Lincoln Arc
Welding Awards.
A total of $15,000 was distributed to 254 high school shop
students from 33 states for the
best written reports by students,
describing their ability to plan
and build an arc welded project.
Fifteen California youths were
named winners. The fifth regional award of $50 went to Vogt
for a two-speed hydraulic wood
splitter. Vogt's instructor at
Nevada Union is Robert Paasch,
Vogt, supervised by Robert
Paasch, NU instructor, built his
wood splitter and is currently
using it on the family ranch in
the Lake Wildwood area. The
Nevada Union student has put
the machine to good use, splitting oak wood which he sells.
This is the 19th year school
shop awards have been given
by the James F, Lincoln Arc
Welding Foundation. The program's objectives are to increase student interest in arc
welding and to encourage the
development of their communicative ‘Skills,
Judging factors included usefulness of the project, ability
and judgment shown in design
and construction, ingenious and
effective use of arc welding, and
clarity and completeness of the

Approximately 1,760 telephone subscribers in rural Grass
Valley will have lower monthly
charges from the newly expanded
rate area that became effective
this week.
George Hutchins, local Pacific
Telephone manager, said the
area included in the ‘boundary
change was determined by population density and consists

south of Alta Sierra Drive, part

approximately $13 per month,
under the new system, and an

to four-party will save fifty cents

Within the area are 1,290 telephone subscribers, of these, 981°
have either one, two or fourparty service on which the
monthly mileage charge dropped
completely.
The other 309 subscribers
have eight-party line service.
Each of these were contacted,
where possible, and willreceive
the grade of service according
to their preference.
