Howard Keene, P.M., secretary. THE THREE top officers for Nevada Lodge No. 13 F. & A.M. Walter master of Nevada Lodge Eugene Walter Jr. became the new master of Nevada Lodge No. 13, Free and Accepted Order of Masons on Jan, 9 in the Nevada City Masonic Temple. In the lodge's 121st installaq tion of officers, Walter replaced the Rev. Haven Martin, who } presided during 1970. Nevada Lodge isthe sixth . oldest Masonic lodge in California, having been chartered by the Grand Masonic Lodge of Wisconsin on April 20, 1850. The story goes that "Cousin Jack" lead miners from Gallina, ‘Wis. carried the charter across the plains to Nevada City. The Lodge was originally designated as Lafayette No. 29, but on May 11, 1851, the Masonic Hall burned during one of Nevada City's destructive holocausts, and the Business for Nevada county increased in 1970 over the previous year in almost all statistical categories, County ClerkRecorder Ted Kohler Jr. reports. Kohler reported that the county had the largest number of recordings in the 114-year history of the recorder's office, the largest amount of revenue was collected, the largest number of P maps were filed, the greatest number of voters were registered and the county voted on automatic voting machines for the first time. His were among many year end statistics issued: by local agencies. _ The two incorporated cities were higher in some categories and lower in others over figures for 1969. Grass Valley had 34 deaths last year and 27 the previous year, issued 557 dog licenses but 616 the year before. ; Building permits were higher last year in Grass Valley with 496 issued versus 349 for 1969. The city issued 645 business licenses last year and 643 for the previous year. Nevada City had 51 deaths last year, a reduction from the 59 in 1969 and issued 309 dog licenses, also less than the 314 in 1969. In 1970-recordings at the county recorder's office numbered 18,816 an increase-of 1,522 over 1969. The year saw an increase of 85 maps over 1969 with 20 subdivision maps filed, 121 survey maps, 104 parcel maps and three assessment district maps. Recording fees were. $8,000 Nevada county — business shows 1970 increase by nearly $300, totaling $1,640. Total county clerk's receipts for 1970 were $25,778 with the 1969 figure $22,377. Civil filings last year (including dissolutions of marriage) totaled 509, up 63; probate filings were 126, down 9; juvenile filings, 99, down 6. Passports were applied for in 1970 by 129 people, up 35 from the year before; 203 marriage licenses were issued, up 23; 122 dog licenses were issued an increase of 35; andthe county had 14,587 registered voters
with 14,029 the figure for 1969. The California Highway Patrol reversed the county trend, showing a decrease in two of its three categories. In 1970 the Grass Valley CHP office investigated 627 accidents, down 54 from 1969; 337 people were injured in auto accidents, twoless than for the previous year. Deaths from auto accidents in 1970 were up over the previous year, however, 16 in 1970 and 14 in 1969, The number of county building permits issued for new residential construction increased in 1970 over the previous year; 231 versus 228. The value of new homes for 1970 was $4,931,376, the building department reported. New home values for 1969 was $4,283,084. The valuation of residential construction for building permits was based on a $10 per square foot price until March, 1969, After that date a valuation of $13.40 per square foot has been used.
