Davis ranks third among colleges and universities in the U.S. in the percentage of foreign full-time students inresidence, exceeded only by Howard University in Washington, D.C. , and the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology, in that order. According to Abdur-Rahman Saghir, Lebanese graduate student in plant physiology, four of the 30-member agricultural faculty at the American University inBeirut are Davis alumni. Saghir himself chose UCD over the University of Michigan and other well-known institutions, all of which offered him assistantships. "Davis is known to have WATCHES [Ps CLOCKS JEWELRY Repairing E. M. They come here from all corners of the globe. Last year, UCD had one of the few Russian students in the United States. From Tashkent and Taiwan they come; from Ceylon andJapan, Iran, Sudan, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, and Peru. Names such as Gad (UAR), Hajrasuliha (Iran), Tal (Israel), Papadopoulos (Greece), and Ramanamurthy (India) are not uncommon here. The largest contingent comes from the United Arab Republic with 46, followed. by India (26), Israel (19), Canada (17), Iran (16), and Nationalist China (14). Five each are from Brazil, Colombia, and Iraq. Sixty-five countries in all are represented. About one-third of them are paying their own way. The rest are here on various scholarships, fellow ships, grants, and government training programs. For the past two years, foreign students from the Davis campus of the University of California have been invited tospend a weekend in the Grass Valley-Nevada City area as guests of local residents.
