Alcatraz
By PHYLLIS L. SMITH
As the rocky mass came into
view thru the mists of that early
ing morning in 1772, the
motley’ crew of men stood in
. awed silence. Finally one spoke
softly..Frey Juan Crespi it was
who addressed Snanish explorer Pedro Fages..‘Senor, is
it not regrettable that Portola
could not see with his own two
eyes the sight that lies before us
on this day? Let your scribe
show that we have looked upon
Isla de los Alcatraces.” > =Aleatraz, ‘‘Isle of the
Pelicans,’’ was discovered when
Fages was searching for Pt.
Reyes. He and his party of
soldiers, accompanied ‘by Frey
Crespi, were encamped
somewhere on or near the
western side of the present
University of California campus, in what we now know as
Berkeley. Historians differ
slightly as to the exact camp
site; but from it could also be
seen Yerba Buena (Goat Island)
and Angel Island..so named by
George

Alcatraz was the site of the
first lighthouse on the California
. coast, installed in 1854; and the
island had been the location of a
i dismal army stockade for four
years at that time.
. A maximum security federal
prison was established there in
1934, and housed many of
America’s most notorious
criminals..murderers, gang:
sters, racketeers and. that
ilk..until it was closed in the
early 1960’s. é
Now a National Park, after
ten years’ abandonment, the
island had suffered the ravages
enance, vandalism and general
disinterest. In spite of all that
has happened in the past
decade, the former federal
prison still has the power to send
chills down a visitor’s spine.
Guided tours take groups of 25
persons from the pier where
every Alcatraz inmate first
landed, along the well-worn
and through’a brick Civil War
era sallyport which recalls the
island’s earlier years as a
military installation.
Deterioration has taken its
sorry toll of the buildings. Salt
air has entered cracks in the
of salt air, total lack of maint°
pathway bordering cannon ports. .

reinforced concrete causing it to
corrode and making the reinforcing steel swell. Strangely
‘enough, the -old bricks and
granite of bygone days has fared
much better.
Alcatraz was the place for the
toughest of our federal prisoners
but only 1,576 men were ever
inmates there. Maximum
number housed there at any
time was only 303; average was
approximately 250 inmates; and
there were guards to the ratio of
one for every three convicts.
Among’ the ‘‘big’ name’’
convicts imprisoned during the
island prison’s “heyday” were
Al Capone, George (Machine
Gun) Kelly and Robert Stroud,
famed also as the ‘Birdman of
Alcatraz.’”’ The latter, according
to tour guides, was kept in
solitary during his entire confinement there.
Tours have been going on for a
bit more than a month now, with
more booked several weeks
ahead, according to the Golden
Gate National Recreation Area
officials. These tours allow the
general public to visit the island
for the first time since 1853-04,
when it became the first fort and
lighthouse on the Pacific Coast.
Park service officials say that

Alcatraz will be maintained just
as it is for tours during the next
.five years, while proposals are
studied with an eye to eventual
decision on what. will finally
happen to the island.
Reservations and tour information may be obtained

So, someday when you feel
you can spare the gasoline and a
full day on San Francisco’s
fabled bay..why not load the
family into the buggy and go
take a look for yourself.
