Dunbar _ 273-2934 “A dozen Rough and Ready folk gathered at the Judicial Court in Nevada City last Friday to: participate in the Chamber of Commerce’s purchase of the Fippin Blacksmith Shop. The price was high, as auctionprices usually are for something desireable, but not as high as we had been afraid it might go. At $1,100 plus of -course, the community of Rough and Ready has secured for itself a bit of history to restore for the generations to come, The chamber needs your encouragement, your ingenuity, your hands and thanks to several‘civic minded citizens only SOME money to restore this interesting bit of the past. +++ The. Fippin family has not gone from Rough and Ready even though all of the property sold. Mr. and Mrs. Allan E. ‘McCrea, who live in Grass Valley but who stillown a home here, purchased the large piece of property along the hill north of the highway. McCrea is a nephew of the older generation of Fippins’, Asa and Jess, and a cousin of Sid, who still makes his home here, The name will remain forever on the old Blacksmith Shop. +++ Manual Frank, decendant of another of the pioneer families of this community, explained a system these. families used in their placer mining operations along Squirrel Creek, which I think you might find interesting. They had three reservoirs hereabouts. They would allow one reservoir to fill from the ditch, same ditch we use today for our irrigating, and then release the torrent of water all at once and it would wash out fresh pockets which the miners would work while the next reservoir filled so that they could repeat the process. One of these reservoirs is the valley area you can see across thehighway from our Post Office. It has been filled in some but it would still hold .enough water to give Squirrel Creek quite a going over, If you follow the highway on down to where Rough and Ready Ravine flattens out into Penn Valley you can still see the huge piles of gravel washed down in this old miningprocess. +++ Malcolm Watkins, curator of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and his wife Joan visited Rough and Ready last Saturday. They came to the West Coast to check on the 1850 kitchen being added to the museum inOakland, They always visit Helene Hurlbut of -Rough and Ready Toll House Antiques Home of Broasted Chicken because she crovidied them with so many oftheir prized antiques. Helene had provided so many of the items in the Smithsonian kitchen that she received an invitation to attend the official opening and she is well on her way to doing the same thing for the Oakland kitchen. Some of the Oakland kitchen came from the old Frank Fippin home. James Schaar, owner of Nevada City’s Red Castle and a real student of life in the 1850 period, was also Helene’s guest onSaturday. +++ Rough and Ready Squaredance Club will hold their regular dance party Saturday, Jan. 20, at 8:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall, Workshop this month will be Jan, 24, Bob Jackson, club caller will call the dance party as well as the Workshop this month. +++ The Rotigh and Ready Fire Dept. was host to the general meeting of the fire depts. of the area on Jan. 17, About 30 active firemen of the area gathered to compare experiences and exchange ideas. A sure sign of good things ahead were Mrs, Monetas' refreshments -cream: puffs topped with whipped cream Auraceuad ait AS aee ee ladies made their plans for the year ahead and Mrs. Moneta, our 1968 chairman, made committee appointments, Arrangements were completed for seving the Chamber of Commerce Dinner on Jan, 26. Mrs. Enright and Mrs. Scherupp will prepare their delicious fried chicken and the chamber is in for a real treathomemade apple pie for dessert. +++ The Grange met Friday night. Master Clara Deardorf seti up the 1968 schedule of events it looks like it will be another full and busy year for Rough and Ready Grange. Jack Bixler assured us the new kitchen will be at least partly ready and so the Annual Mothers’ Day Dinner, which draws an enormous crowd, will be undertaken again. Lecturer M. E.
