For the first time in théhistory of California dnd possibly in the
entire United States, an injunction was issued to restrain a warden
from hanging a man. It happened at San Quentin and the intended
gallows victim was one Ulla Mohammed, a native of Afghanistan,
convicted of first degree murder in the death of one Allah Atkar in
Sonoma, July 1921. Defense lawyers obtained the injunction due to
a ‘notable lack of firm and indisputable evidence of our client’s
guild’*..according to published reports at the time.
. ‘Old Betsey’’, who was said to be the last of the Oustemah
Indians, died claiming to have lived thru 100 Sierra winters. Betsey
was a member of the Midos tribe and was well liked by the white

hours, and she had vivid memories of the first white men ever seen
in this region.
