While there he was the guest of Superintendent Donald Dickey and Mine foreman Frank Knapp. The Oriental is the oldest mine in the State of California still in operation. Opened in 1860 it has operated without let-up except for the period 1939-40 when Public Law 208 closed the mine because of the War Manpower act. The mine is a busy place producing some 30 tons-of rich Gold Ore every working day. Mr. Dickey explained that his mine has its own machine shop, with welders and other tools for making minor repairs. Every facility is at the mine for safe and continuous operation. From the entrance to the Portal one travels by ore car for a distancé: of 6000 feet straight into the mountain to the shaft which drops down 2000 feet where mining is now being done, In the series of pictures beélow, Brooks has caught the schedule of how Gold Ore is brought out and processed ‘for maximum recovery today. Other mines in the area of the Oriental are taking on life and it is hoped that before long the mining industry will boom again.
