NEVADA ¢QUNTY PLUM CONSERVE This recipe is the contribution of Mrs. William (Helen) Rupert of Novato..a regular Nugget subscriber and reader; and it was originated by her great-grandmother more than a century ago in Dlinois. 'We were able to get the Laroda plums at a ranch on the west side of the Marysville-Oroville road about five miles north of the signal for Highway 20 to Grass Valley. They were firm and sweet and easy to work with.." writes Mr. Rupert. His brief letter continues.. "Helen likes to let the conserve "'age'’ about two months, so it makes a very nice Christmas gift for some of our friends, I've not told her about writing this letter, so if you print the’ ‘recipe it will come as a surprise to her..she reads the Nugget each week before I get home from my job in San Francisco!" * KK * So here's the recipe..and it does sound scrumptious! 5 lbs Italian Prunes or haroda Plums (these are purple with deep yellow meat)--halved and pitted. ~ One pound walnuts, chopped coarsely. Two large oranges and two lemons (unpeeled). Quarter and remove all seeds and fibrous tissue in center. 2 Ibs raisins (Ceeded Muscats or seedless Thompsons) If using seedless Thompsons (I prefer them) soak in warm water . for about 1/2 hour and squeeze out all excess water. 5 lbs sugar. Put plums, oranges and lemons and raisins thru food chopper. Use large heavy jam kettle, add sugar and walnuts and mix well, Let stand for about 1 hour and then bring to a boil and cook (gentle boil) about 45 minutes, stirring frequently as it will burn easily--so use low heat. This makes about 8 1/2 pints. Use sterilized jars, pour hot paraffin over tops, and when cool put on lids for added protection.
